Weekend Guide

---

After singing along to Natasha Bedingfield last week (yes, we know), we've been reminiscing about our younger days. So we've got a few childhood faves in the mix this weekend: sleepovers, food tech, cola… UJ style, of course. If you're looking for something a little more highbrow, we've got a bit of Warhol and sky-high fine dining too. Or for some adult fun, join us at the Belvedere bespoke bar at Taste for a Cucumber Fix. We'll also be at Shrimpy's eating posh fried chicken and admiring the pineapple lamps. Immature? Us?

This Weekend’s Picks

• FRI Upstairs at the Ten Bells • SAT Kitsuné at XOYO
• SUN Andy Warhol: The Portfolios

Enough said.

FRIDAY

EAT:
UPSTAIRS AT THE TEN BELLS
  SLEEPOVER:
THE DORSET SQUARE HOTEL

If you missed the Young Turks pop up, never fear. Most of the original crew is back, serving mod British food above a pub. They've gone all à la carte this time though (ex-Ledbury chef Giorgio Ravelli has joined the fray), and even the snacks sound haute – buttermilk chicken with pine salt, smoked cods roe and chipsticks. Posh chipsticks? Oh yes they did.   With the new Bulgari just opened and citizenM on its way, we're trying to find any excuse for sleepovers in the city. Firmdale's latest is the perfect fit – 38 individually designed rooms overlooking a garden square in Marylebone. Take advantage (not literally) of the honesty bar and wake up to Frette bed linen and breakfast in the Potting Shed.

SATURDAY

COOK:
School of Wok
  PARTY:
KITSUNÉ CLUB NIGHT AT XOYO

Brush up on your kitchen skills at this new cookery school. It's not all about the wok (sushi classes are a must) but a penchant for Asian food might help. It's in Covent Garden, so if your efforts are inedible, you can skip along to Mishkin's or Opera Tavern down the road. Food Tech just got fancy.    When Parisian posse Kitsuné are back on our side of the Eurostar, expect nothing less than a hipster-friendly dance-a-thon. Celebrating the release of their Soleil Mix, they're hosting an electro-filled summer party at XOYO, bringing over favourites Housse De Racket and Jupiter, and a set by label boss Gildas. Meet you on the dance floor.

ART:
ANDY WARHOL:
THE PORTFOLIOS
  EAT:
TONKOTSU

One for all you pop art junkies out there: an exhibition from the American master of the silk-screen technique. Alongside the usual still life images (Campbell's Soup, Cantaloupes II) and infamous portraits of Monroe and Muhammad Ali, you'll find self-portraits, Superman and the Wicked Witch of the West. Expect colour and lots of it.   If fat noodles à la Koya aren't your thing, head over to Tonkotsu, the first specialist ramen bar in London. Following in the footsteps of Burger and Lobster and Tramshed, they're keeping the menu short, serving up one thing and one thing only: ramen. (Ok there might be a few dumplings too.) It's 50% off until Monday – go!

Shrimpy's – Pineapples and petrol stations in King's Cross

The King's Cross Filling Station, Goods Way, N1C 4UR
www.shrimpys.co.uk | 020 8880 6111

Location
King's Cross is now well and truly on the up. The station is finally taking shape, eat.st is buzzing and cool new eateries are popping up in the most unlikely of places. Shrimpy's is no exception: converted from a disused petrol station (yes, really), it hugs the canal and sits forlornly in a desolate landscape of abandoned buildings and construction sites. But that just makes it all the more fun…
Vibe
This is the restaurant to be seen at right now. The latest project from the guys behind Bistrotheque, it's fun with a pinch of irony. The room is small (it's basically the old petrol station shop) so big groups might struggle – two is the magic number.
Flavours
The menu is decidedly American (North and South) so expect plantain with your dips, and chimichurri with your steak. The soft-shell crab burger has already become a signature dish, but the fried chicken with sweetcorn and red pepper polenta is also a UJ fave. Ask for dessert specials: the sundaes are divine and perfectly portioned.
Décor
Despite such humble beginnings, there's not a hint of forecourt or whiff of petrol. Carmody Groarke have transformed this small slice of land into a thing of beauty: scalloped, translucent fibreglass surrounds the restaurant, a neon sign sits boldly atop, and the interior is a mix of lavish white linen and crystal glass combined with quirky, bright illustrations on the walls. Oh, and pineapple lamps, obviously.
Upshot
You can book (hurray!), there's space at the bar for walk-ins, and it's fun! And who could resist a restaurant with a pineapple as its totem.
