FRIDAY

DRINK:
EDWIN'S WINE BAR
  MUSIC:
LIVE AT THE ROOF GARDENS

A bit of provincial France… in Shoreditch. There's no chintz at Edwin's Wine Bar – which hails from Lyon – just casual, low key dining and an extensive wine list, sourced from 70 different producers which feature on a 30-strong rotating list. The menu is similarly français, serving up traditional classics like magret de canard duck, salmone marine and escalope of foie gras. We say go for a carafe of Côte du Rhône and the cheese board. Bon app.   The live music series at The Kensington Roof Gardens is back for the autumn. The Tudor Gardens will be transformed into a bona fide gig space (in a tent), which will showcase up-and-coming talent on Fridays, and jazz and soul on Saturdays. Tonight's headliner is British singer Ola Onabule who'll be offering up a mix of flat-out funk, and 60s and 70s inspired soul.

ART:
FRIEZE LONDON
  FILM:
ON THE ROAD

It's that time of year again. Even if you aren't planning on purchasing art, there's still plenty to enjoy at Frieze. Enjoy some Yayoi Kusama and David Nash at the Sculpture Park see everything from Degas to the Chapman bros at sister event Frieze Masters and eat at Locanda Locatelli and Umu while you're at it. Alternatively, head to the Serpentine's multi-disciplinary festival Memory Marathon to see contributions from the likes of everyone from Jefferson Hack and David Lynch to De Herzog and Meuron.   After a postponed UK release date, the much-anticipated film-of-the-year is finally here. Based on Jack Kerouac's generation-defining novel (and directed by Walter Salles of The Motorcycle Diaries), On The Road is the story of a group of friends on a roadtrip across 50s Beatnik America. It features a fittingly cool cast: Sam Riley, Tom Sturridge, Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst and Steve Buscemi. Watch the trailer here (though you should probably read the novel first).

ESCAPE

A House For Essex

A pilgrimage chapel in Essex in collaboration with Grayson Perry and FAT: this could only be the work of design collective Living Architecture (behind A View for London and The Balancing Barn). The building will house a series of interlocking spaces complete with Grayson Perry's tapestries, mosaic flooring and decorative timberwork. And there'll be an unusually placed bath. Construction won't begin until next year but stay tuned for booking news as this will fill up fast.

IBIZA CLOSING PARTIES

ROUND-UP

Stretching the season has good and bad implications. Good, because it allows parties like Circo Loco to put on the most ridiculous closing party line-up on the planet (bad as in good), and bad because what has traditionally been my birthday party week now only covers a handful of closing parties. But what a handful! Sasha's Never Say Never closing party at Ushuaïa was one of their strongest line-ups this summer, with Blond-ish, Steve Bug and Scuba all stepping up to the plate (and it was nice to hear Anstascia & Vivie-Ann drop Jamie Jones' remix of 11:11 'Tourist Trap' once more). Then, The Man Like took control in front of a crowd of almost 5000 hungry punters. Everybody knows how commercial the island has been in 2012, so it's great to see Ushuaïa supporting a party of this (hot) nature. After that, it was a hop, skip and jump over to Grial for the traditional after party. Further up the road, Jamie Jones and Seth Troxler were playing for Pete Tong at Pacha, and, despite dropping some classic Phil Collins, there was no moving from the heated Grial.

The next night, however, all roads led to Pacha for Defected's most forward-facing line-up of the summer, with Tensnake live and Solomun both delivering season-defining sets. Tensnake debuted his new single 'Mainline' with fast-rising Syron (who sung on the amazing Rudimental song 'Spoons' with MNEK), showing the main room what his live chops are made of. Then, Solomun took everyone home with a DJ set that marked him as the most talked-about (deep) house DJ of the summer. If this is a signal of where Defected and Pacha may go in 2012, bring it on. Of course, with both Danny Whittle (Pacha's brand manager) and Mark Netto (programme director) – who have helped steer that particular ship for over a decade – departing the club in October, it's impossible to know what will happen next.

From there, details become a bit sketchy but Monday to Wednesday definitely included stop-offs at Fatboy Slim (great birthday present), DC10 for Maceo Plex and Mathias Tanzmann, Nicolas Jaar and Soul Clap at Space, and Pacha once more for Subliminal closing with Diplo, Erick Morillo, Sunnery James and Ryan Marciano playing b2b 'til sunrise. Sadly, seven days in the sun then meant having to miss Cocoon closing in October (I'm reliably informed that Ricardo and Loco Dice closed the terrace), Amnesia closing with back-out-of-of-semi-retirement Danny Tenaglia, Dubfire and Marco Carola, and a DC10 closing that featured more guest stars than the opening montage of The Player. Looking back, there's no doubt that 2012 in Ibiza was The Year Of Change – but with everyone now looking for their next move. Summer 2013 promises more swerves and surprises across the white isle than ever before. Listen out for further announcements.
