Weekend Guide

We’ve gone for certain themes this weekend (unintentionally). DISCO is on the mind at UJHQ — Daft Punk’s new album out on Monday and Nile Rodgers at IMS (book tickets now!) — while ’70s California, ’80s London and ’90s bling are on the fashion menu this weekend. We’re also looking to summer with two terraces (one haute, one Spanish), one skyline restaurant and a hit list for Cannes. And, for those of you running the Nike #WeOwnTheNight 10k on Saturday… good luck (there are still places left for those who want to sign up)! See you at the finish line.

Toy Story

Once again, the grown up world is obsessed with toys. Minnie reigned last year, now it’s Miss Piggy’s turn — we’ve been seeing her everywhere from new cultural journal Special Request (who are exhibiting next week in Kingly Court), to Tommy Hilfiger’s latest capsule collection with The Muppets (actually for kids, but we bet we can fit into that hat). Roksanda Ilincic is also getting in on the childishness — it’s just been announced she’ll be redesigning Barbie’s Malibu dreamhouse. She studied architecture, after all.

INTERNATIONAL PICK

If you Cannes...

In Cannes? First up let’s talk shop. A Prada-clad frenzy on La Croisette may be the talk of the town for Gatsby, but we’ve got a couple of other films on our radar, namely Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring and Nicolas Winding Refn’s Only God Forgives (if only for the soundtrack). After the Palme d’Ors are out of the way, it’s all about les pop ups. Start the night with some vodka cans — Warhol-inspired by Belvedere at La Chambre Noir # Factory 2013 – before toasting the town at Parisian visitors Le Baron and Club Silencio. And then there’s Bungalow 8…

FRIDAY

AL FRESCO:
IbÉrica La Terraza
  DRINK:
Oblix at the Shard

We’ve been in Madrid mode ever since our visit, and while Canary Wharf isn’t exactly our stomping ground, we appreciate a good terrace when we see one. Ibérica La Terraza, the new outdoor space at the Canary Wharf branch, isn’t just a terrace — it has its own bar and kitchen. Head there early for a pre-office breakfast of toast with tomato, take a long, jamón-heavy lunch, or go post-work for some cava (they have a great selection), sobresada and padrón peppers.   Get high this Friday… 32 floors up The Shard at Oblix, the latest offering from Rayner Becker and Arjun Waney of Zuma and Roka. Expect a 100-cover lounge bar with live music, elaborate cocktails with hand-chiseled, purified ice and an interactive sommelier station. The equally big restaurant is the pair’s first non-Japanese venture. Headed up by Fabien Beaufour (of The French Laundry in Napa and Eleven Madison Park), expect a New York-grill style menu. And, if you feel a bit Lost In Translation, that’s no accident — Becker spent a few years at the Peak Bar in Tokyo’s Park Hyatt.

Versus Versace

Yesterday, the highly anticipated relaunch of Versus Versace went live. They’ve remodelled the brand for Generation Y — it’s online only, with a live launch that saw Grimes and Lenny Kravtitz perform alongside a fashion show. Instead of having a full–time creative director, Versus will partner with a series of upcoming fashion talent instead. This season, JW Anderson has designed an avant-garde capsule collection. As for the main line? BLING.

SHOP:
Yasmin Sewell’s Beach
In The East
  DISCO:
DJ De La Loakim at
Nobu Berkeley St

The queen of fashion consultancy Yasmin Sewell opens pop up shop Beach In The East this weekend in an empty swimming pool. She has selected pieces that, for her, encapsulate the skateboard culture of 1970s California. Shop edits from House of Holland and Thomas Tait, as well as special items from Acne, Sophie Webster (palm tree shoes, hello), Jill Urwin, Peridot and beanie bandanas from Silver Spoon. We want us some bandana beanies.   For those who want their D-I-S-C-O with a side of sushi, head to Nobu Berkeley St where DJ De La Loakim (who performed at their Unplugged session earlier this year) will be on the decks spinning her signature mix of nu-jazz, disco and electro funk. Having performed all over the world, the Cypriot disco maven will have you dancing discotheque as you sip your Yuzupolitans.

LAST CALL

Ibiza Music Summit

Time’s running out to book tickets and flights to this year’s IMS. It’s just been announced that Nile Rodgers (he of the anthem of summer, Get Lucky) will be recording the IMS 2013 anthem. If that doesn’t get you booking, then perhaps the IMS Legends dinner with Fatboy Slim, or the recently announced schedule, will. You’ll also be able to check out new spots such as ECC Beach (opening this weekend) and Ushuaïa Tower.

IMS, May 22-24, Gran Hotel Ibiza, Paseo Juan Carlos I, Ibiza Town 07800 Ibiza, Spain

ESCAPE

RCA at Cowley Manor

It’s not too often we say “go country” but, when it’s our beloved Cowley Manor (remember the ’11 pool party?), we say pack your bags and tartans, it’s time to go manorside. Picnic in the meadows, and see the seven shortlisted sculptures that are spread across the rolling greens (look out for the winning ‘Cheese Rolling’ by artist Emily Price). Finish with some R&R at the C-side Spa.

BREAKFAST:
The Ritz Terrace
  FASHION:
As Seen in Blitz:
Fashioning ’80s Style

Go for an haute Sunday lunch at The Ritz Terrace, which is now open for the summer period. Mosaic floors, crisp white linen, gleaming silverware, flowers and parasols — this is “palace style” dining at its best. Swap your traditional roast for a “Menu Surprise” of 6 seasonal dishes and wine pairings picked by head sommelier Tobias Brauweiler. The dressed crab rolls with avocado and melon, and the slow cooked duck egg also come highly recommended.   The ICA is celebrating the publication of new book As Seen In Blitz: Fashioning ’80s Style. The exhibition looks at the life of one of the most instrumental fashion magazines of the 1980s (along with i-D and The Face) through the eyes of its former fashion editor Iain R Webb. There’ll be highlights of the magazine — contributors ranged from Leigh Bowery to Anna Piaggi — alongside talks and a screening of cult avant-garde film Liquid Sky. While you’re there, also check out the New York Cinematique Series.

BRASSERIE CHAVOT – Banging Brasserie

41 Conduit Street, W1S 2YF | 020 7183 6425 | @brasseriechavot

Location
The lower end of Conduit Street, basically no man’s land for food. Vivienne Westwood is your only excuse for being right here.
Vibe
This is not where you come for a raucous evening, but we liked the atmosphere — chic, friendly and laid back. Any place where you leave knowing more about the chef than your ex–boy/girlfriend is okay by us (Eric, the Michelin starred head chef here — aka Eric Chavot — shot off his two toes, killing dreams of a military career, hence the chef whites). We liked it even more when the lights went down, music was turned up and voices were raised.
Flavours
We were going to a brasserie, yes, but our mantra was no bread, frites, cheese or red wine because of the fact we were trying to (quickly) train for a Nike 10K. All four of those were shot from the moment we sat down… and then some (Tempura! Dessert! More bread!). We went off–piste, but it was well worth it. The surprising thing here is that for French bistro cuisine, everything was actually light. Highlights included the soft shell crab with whipped aioli (a serious stand out, this dish had memorable flavour), the sea bream with tapenade and fennel and the selection of French cheeses with walnut bread. We’ll be back for the peanut and praline croustillant, more frites and the grilled tiger prawns and chorizo.
Décor
This restaurant is attached to the Westbury Hotel, but you’d never know it. This dining room is classic, but refreshingly different. The red chairs are similar to the green ones at Cecconi’s, but the high–backed half booths, the layout, the multiple chandeliers and the tiling all feels fresh — we like.
Upshot
This is a great place to catch up with an old friend, or have a business meeting. The tables are spread out, the service is slick and unassuming and the food is simple, but delicious.
