Weekend Guide

For those not slipping into wellies or holding centre court this weekend, fear not, we've got some inner city going-ons for you. A new champagne bar, a dose of disco and maybe even some Gutterslut action, will have you glitterballin' until Monday. For some sustenance in-between, Ducksoup's little sister, Rawduck has opened Eastside, and King's X is flying the street food flag. And if you're after some culture, hit up the ICA. PS. Adios Street Feast! Get down there this Saturday for their closing party.

Last time we hoopla'd, we hula'd and we yoyo'd to earn NikeFuel points at our Tropicarnival event at KXFS. Next up in our Fuel Your Summer series is a DJ Lab at Shoreditch Grind with Kaz James on July 10. Guests will be split into groups, then each given a DJ lesson before heading upstairs to the studio to create an anthem for the evening – get moving with maracas and tambourines – fuelled by Espresso Martinis and food platters. The group that earns the most NikeFuel wins, and may even be joining Kaz, who'll be playing a set to round off the evening.

To enter for a pair of tickets please email fuelyoursummer@urbanjunkies.com and tell us why you want to attend this event. Please also state your DJ ability: beginner/intermediate/advanced. You will be notified by July 3 if you are successful.

If you haven't yet stepped into the dark and daring bohemian world of The Black Cat Cabaret, then here's your chance to win VIP dinner tickets. This weekly cabaret and circus dinner show at London's historic Café de Paris was dreamt up by three founding members of Boom Boom Club , and draws inspiration from Montmartre in its heady, Abisnthe-soaked heyday. Expect street singers, acrobats, seductive sirens, wandering magicians, and a fire-eating pig with sideshow skills – all perfectly accompanied by fine dining and moonlit cocktails.

We've got two pairs of tickets for a champagne dinner and show in the month of July. To enter, simply email competition@urbanjunkies.com with your name and phone number. The winner will be contacted by the end of the week.

FRIDAY

DRINK:
CATCH CHAMPAGNE BAR & LOUNGE
  PARTY:
DISCO

Start the weekend with a little Friday fizz. We know we've been backing cava lately, but we do love us a champagne bellini, especially when it's at Andaz Liverpool Street's new champagne bar Catch. Come here for le pre-party – a resident DJ, 70 different types of champers, signature bellinis, and light bar snacks such as charcuterie (there's a Berkel slicer), oysters and cheese. We also love the iridescent centre bar.   It seems like Daft Punk have inspired disco hysteria. When we heard the folks behind Bunga Bunga were opening a 70s disco club, we weren't sure (Reflex, anyone?), but when there's a disco ball and Donna Summer involved, we'll try anything once. Give up your bags at the Pan-Am check-in desk (with a real-life conveyor belt), before cutting shapes in the Studio 54-meets-Paradise Garage-style disco den – think Keith Haring men, vinyl-only decks and choreographed routines from singers and dancers. Ahh freak out!

APP PICK

Wheely

Just when you thought the taxi market was saturated enough, we're throwing another cab app at you. Wheely cabs are smart, have bottles of Evian in the back, give you umbrellas when it's raining, and are 20% cheaper than le black cab. The app is also handy – request a car with a quick tap-tap and see where they are on the map – and there's no need to pay by cash as it's all recorded on your account. So, share the cab love.

KERB SATURDAYS
  PARTY:
GUTTERSLUT NOT SO OFFICIAL SUMMER RITES PRIDE AFTER PARTY

Street food collective KERB is set to rev its trucks up this weekend for the first of its KERB Saturdays series. With the weather set to be (semi) decent, we think a nosh around Granary Square is spot on: take your pick of Italo-American sandwiches at Capiche?, pintxos at the Donostia Social Mobile or paella from Jamon Jamon. And, if the mercury really does rise beyond the teens, get sucking on some gourmet ice lollies from Ice Kitchen.   If a gender-bending, all-night, technicolour rave is your tonic, put on your rainbow stripes and head to Eastbloc for the Not So Official Summer Rites Pride After Party, hosted by Gutterslut, the collective who used to host after parties in a disused Dalston cheese factory. Celebrate Pride by raving, slaving and misbehaving with DJs Sharooz, Kate Hutchinson, Jonny Kalifornia and more.

St Mawes

If you're not at Glasto this weekend, we say round the troops (that are left, anyway) and get down to Cornwall for some sunshine and sea air. Book into one of the St Mawes Retreats – Moonrakers sleeps 12 – in the quiet harbour village of St Mawes (conveniently located in the Gulf Stream). Use the retreat's very own powerboat, and make sure to book a personal chef for some freshly caught lobster on the BBQ.

SUNDAY

EAT:
RAWDUCK
  ART:
KEEP YOUR TIMBER LIMBER

Soho spot Ducksoup has opened up a little sibling in Hackney. The aptly named Rawduck is a wine shop meets bar with an all-day, Euro-centric menu. Go at brunch and choose between the prosciutto and ricotta Hackney Bun, the Reuben (with wasabi mayo) and the Dirty Bird, a chilli roast chicken, iceberg lettuce and jalapeno mayo combo. Otherwise, go for some Sunday night reds and San Daniele ham and sourdough crumbs.   Get your art fill this weekend with a little illustration. The ICA's Keep Your Timber Limber looks at how artists since the 1940s have used drawing to address ideas that are critical and current to their time, including war, the politics of gender and censorship. The exhibition displays the work of eight artists, many of which were originally produced for a commercial context. Look out for Antonio Lopez's Gianni Versace campaign, and homosexual art by Tom of Finland.

Casa Negra – East London's latest plaything

54-56 Great Eastern Street, EC2A 3QR | 0207 033 7360 | @CasaNegraLDN

Location
Casa Negra calls Great Eastern Street home – and it's a match made in heaven. If La Bodega Negra is Soho's sexy lair, Casa Negra is Shoreditch's latest fun house.
Vibe
Like something out of Y Tu Mama También. Will Ricker hasn't let Casa Negra become a simple branch of Bodega; it very much has its own identity. This is where you should come for late dinners and long nights. The Casa Playroom downstairs is the most fun bar we've seen in the East for a while (see Décor below), and we'd imagine the same door policy and in-the-know events apply. Like Bodega, it will probably attract the celeb set – Jessie Ware was there on the night we dined.
Flavours
Unlike the somewhat Mexico-via-New York options on La Bodega Negra and the Moor Street Café menus, Casa Negra feels like a much more authentic take on Mexican food. Here, it's all about sharing. The guacamole is moreish, the tiny tacos are small but pack a punch, and are a great size for lunch. Try the Cochinita Pibil with achiote and orange-braised pork (our favourite), and the Queso Asado with Chihuahua cheese, a Mexican, and better, version of halloumi. The Carnitas de Lechon, Casa's speciality, is a must – the scratching is salty and super-crunchy, and the sucking pig itself, which should be wrapped up in a taco with all the garnishes, is soft and smoky. Fish-wise, we had the spicy Ceviche de Caballa, with fresh mackreel and lots of chilli, and the seafood cocktail with mussels, prawns, avocado and coriander, doused in ketchup. We weren't sure about this, but – points for authenticity – it definitely felt like something they'd do in Mexico. The Lucky 7 cocktail list (all with tequila) was a highlight. The Casa Margarita is classy, the Paloma is sweet (and very strong), and the elderflower, cucumber and minty Vote Pedro is a great palate cleanser. And, instead of dessert, we say order the flight of frozen fruit margaritas – spiced mango and strawberry and black pepper were the best.
Décor
Three words: tacky, fabulous and Mexican. Classic English chichi – chandeliers and wood paneling – is contrasted against Mexican beach party – fold out chairs with popular beer logos, beach lanterns and multicoloured bulbs on string. Downstairs in the Playroom, piñatas and tacky toys hang from the ceiling, while incredible, lit-up, cardboard art, which is in La Bodega Negra too, adorns the walls of booths. We'll be back here to party.
Upshot
One… two… three… tequila!
