Don't worry get arty |
The art world has been given a brave-new-world shake up. We've queued at the RCA Secrets, knocked elbows at the Friezes, partied at the Art Basels and scoured the Biennales, but aside from the soirées and socialising, the serious stuff has been left to inner circle. Until now. A new wave of initiatives is taking art from the hoity-toity to the hoi polloi. |
First up – sticking to the traditionalist model but taking the paddle online, Artnet dipped its toes into the virtual world by launching the first online auction platform for modern and contemporary art – think Ebay with Warhol. But for those who want a bit of help before the click and buy, Artsy launched in October 2012 and is all about the virtual gallery experience. Click to 400 galleries and over 100 museums with direct (and free) access to specialists à la personal shopping.
Alternatively if you want to try before you buy, Riseart will lend you a painting from a portfolio of galleries – including the Tate and Serpentine. But for those who are less Hirst and more DIY, the newly launched Affordable Art Studio chooses an artist for you via a personality quiz (fun!) and allows you and your chosen one to customise a piece.
Finally, the biggest player to rev up the artvolution – Amazon Art. Set to do what Net-a-porter did for designer fashion. Launched this month, the site is all about giving everyone a piece of limited edition art at affordable prices, with a few exceptions, of course ($4.85 million Norman Rockwell painting, we're looking at you).
Forget gavels, paddles, and curators, this is click and buy accessibility for the masses.

Last week we laced up and took to the rink for our Fuel Your Summer event with the Nike + FuelBand. Held in pop up roller rink Skate King's Cross, people were fuelled by hard shakes, wings and burgers (thank you Disco Bistro), our wheels spun to electro beats, tricks learnt (kind of) via four-wheel experts and there was even a conga line. GOAL! |
