Apartment living goes social |
Forget the days of not recognising your neighbours: apartment living is changing from Brooklyn to Miami and London, and it's coming to a property near you. It's Melrose Place in the year 2013, with the inevitable drama of rich young things mingling under one roof included. |
First up: stateside. For cashed-up, gentrified hipsters in NYC, North Williamsburg waterfront apartments the Edge and Northside Piers have transplanted the college dorm experience into luxe high-rise apartments. It's all about fraternity, grown up: think communal dining tables, fire pits, co-ed saunas, resident lounges and restaurants on site. These apartment buildings are exclusive and slick, distinct from the grittier, old-school offerings in South Williamsburg.
Heading south to Miami, high-end hotels are getting in on the luxury housing game and creating upmarket communities in the process. Mondrian South Beach and The Setai are offering apartments for sale – within the hotels themselves. Now, those who can't tear themselves away from the hotels' dynamic social scenes don't have to. Apartment owners can take advantage of all hotel amenities and get access to exclusive perks like private rooftop bars and VIP boat slips.
Now for some developments closer to home. If Candy & Candy's famously luxe One Hyde Park development was for old-moneyed types, club king Nick House's upcoming condo tower is for London's young, affluent, and sociable elite. The development is the West End's answer to 90210, and aims to create a "micro society" in the capital's high-end heartland. Tenants will reportedly be handpicked: under-40s, tech start-up founders or ad agency partners should apply (provided they have a hefty bank balance: the starting price for a one-bed is expected at £800,000). With a roof deck for communal yoga classes and barbecues, an on-site deli and a basement party space, it's got all the makings to be an exclusive, dynamic social enclave… watch out, Made In Chelsea: a new It-set is moving in to town.
EC1 isn't far behind, either. We hear that waterside apartment complex Canaletto, designed by Dutch architect Ben van Berkel, is set to open in 2015 on Regent's Canal. With a private member's club, sky terrace, hotel-style concierge, and cinema, the 31-storey tower (with just a single penthouse) is sure to attract the East's high-end dwellers.
Suddenly it's time to move house… |
