FRIDAY

EAT:
KEEPER'S HOUSE
  PARTY:
GAY BINGO 10TH ANNIVERSARY

The Royal Academy of Arts has pulled out all the stops with Keeper's House, transforming a 19th century townhouse into its new hangout space for artists and art lovers alike. The restaurant (under chef Ivan Simeoli), is all about seasonal ingredients: think dishes like wild Cornish sea bass, razor clam, cannelloni and rainbow chard. If you're after something lighter, the lounges offer all day nibbles. Don't want to leave? There's a bar and secret garden to keep you occupied- as well as the art, of course, all in the heart of Mayfair.   Now for something completely different. Gay Bingo is turning 10, and to celebrate they're taking over the Hackney Empire for an OTT night of cabaret, glitter, dance routines, hijinks… and bingo. The original alt-bingo crew Ma Butcher, Jonny Woo and John Sizzle will be on stage, joined by special guests. Having taken their show on the road everywhere from Brixton to the ICA, Glastonbury to Sydney, the Gay Bingo crew knows how to work a crowd, so expect no-holds-barred entertainment… we hear pyrotechnics are on the agenda.

Or stay in London: Random Magic Halloween Special is that same night, with Omar S, Horse Meat Disco and Maxxi Soundsystem on the decks across the labyrinthine Fire and the Lightbox. Plus, Winterwell is going gothic on the 26th as well, taking over Loft Studios for a New Orleans immersive voodoo experience (with Norman Jay himself spinning tunes). On the 31st, 90s kids can take a trip back in time with The Alibi's No Scrubs Hip Hop Halloween Masquerade Ball, and entry is gratis. Trick or treat?

SATURDAY

DRINK:
THE LIQUOR CABINET
  SEE:
POP ART DESIGN

Discerning drinkers should make a beeline to The Liquor Cabinet, Hackney's new hole-in-the-wall hangout. The brainchild of Thom Docker and Mikey Seddon (both Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town alumni), the intimate bar is a cosy affair, all plush booths and candlelight. As for the drinks? Expect Pour de Jour wines sourced from boutique vineyards, craft beers, and the drink trend of the season: pre-bottled cocktails, with negronis, old fashioneds, martinis and more.   The Barbican is going graphic, with its latest exhibition, Pop Art Design. Arriving in London via Basel, Copenhagen and Stockholm, this must-see show is a comprehensive look at pop art's most prolific years, the 1950s-1970s. With artwork from the movements' heroes (Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol) shown alongside iconic objects of design, such as Eames furniture, the exhibition explores the congruence between the work of artists and designers in the post-war era. Pop to it.

Get ready to dance all day: electronic maestro Four Tet has curated a 12-hour affair at Shoreditch's Village Underground. Do Not Disturb

Generator Berlin MITTE

In A Sentence
Design led hostel.
About
Yes, this is a hostel, so although you forgo added luxuries such as turndown and room service this isn't your usual flip-flops in the shower kind of place. Its central location in the centre of Mitte (comparable to slicked up Shoreditch) makes this a viable option to rest your head.
Décor
As with Venice, Anwar Mekhayech– whose CV includes Soho House Toronto – the hostel has been given the attention to detail normally reserved for boutique boltholes. Teaming up with local designer Ester Bruzkus– the pair have doused Generator Berlin Mitte with contrasting elements akin to the city: warm wood panels vs. grey cement tiles, graffiti (thanks to artists Luke Embden and Thierry Noir) next to cosy chalet-like spaces, and simple bare bones furniture alongside neon and high-gloss features. The rooms, though no-frills have the essentials addressed: power sockets aplenty, black out blinds, lamps above each bed and power showers.
Highlights
Location, location, and location. For first-timers you are within walking distance to the must–see sites such as Museum Island, Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden, and the Reichstag. And for those au fait with Berlin: the area is buzzing with cool cafes, bars, and boutiques: a stones throw to the arty neighbourhood Prenzlauer Berg and shopping mecca Scheunenviertel.
Eat and Drink
Although there is a cafeteria attached to the hostel – we say give it a miss and explore the neighbourhood haunts. The location means you won't have to stamp the pavement for long. We love Katz Orange, an experimental restaurant and bar where we feasted on smoked mackerel, short ribs, lamb and chocolate-coated crickets, yes crickets. Or, for more traditional fare, head to Schwarzwaldstuben around the corner.
Party
This is Berlin, so expect to party. The hostel has been designed with a labyrinth of underground party tunnels so keep an eye out for in-house parties, exhibitions and events. However, the bars and clubs around the area will keep you out 'till the early hours. Our tip - hit up King Size Bar a small dive around the corner filled to the brim with Mitte's hipster gang.
Top Tip
Book a private room: affordable and spacious with en-suites.
Why Go Now
There is still a few more weeks until the big freeze hits, meaning you'll be able to make the most of the central location and spend your days walking or biking between hoods.
Info
Generator Berlin Mitte, Oranienburger Straße 65, 10117 Berlin, Germany.
