CONVERSE : #GETWINTERIZED Quiz Night With Huw Stephens |
Last Saturday we went back to the 90s with the Converse outdoor screening of Wayne's World. An orchestra belted out the soundtrack (cue impromptu sing-alongs!) and we sipped on hot buttered rum and feasted on wood fired pizzas. The party continues TONIGHT with a quiz hosted by Radio 1 presenter Huw Stephens. Expect mac 'n' cheese and some cocktail infused competition.
Want a chance to be up against Team UJ? Click here for a chance to win a pair of tickets. GAME ON! |

EAT:
THE JONES FAMILY PROJECT |
DRINK:
Earlham Street Clubhouse |
Soft launching this weekend (50% off food) is Shoreditch newbie The Jones Family Project. Keeping in line with London's penchant for contemporary European cuisine the menu is categorised by sea (steamed, baked, and with a fish of the day), land (guinea fowl, venison, and root vegetables) with a strong focus on the grill (pork chops, chicken, burgers and steak). But the most interesting dishes on the menu? The starters: duck egg scramble, house-cured brandy salmon and baked dates stuffed with chorizo. |
The NY/LON exchange is still going strong thanks to Earlham Street Clubhouse, but this time, it's all about East Coast prep with added quirk. Have your beer pumped directly to your table via vintage gas pumps as you sit amongst vintage signs and fairy lights à la Coney Island. The cocktail list follows a Hamptons theme, too, with punches, coolers and sea breezes, while the food consists of pizzas with heavy toppings of American pop culture. Expect slices of Marty McFly (mushrooms and ricotta), Screech (Salami Picante) and The Fresh Prince (fennel sausage) – to name a few. |

EAT:
Café Murano |
Drink:
Peyote |
It's all about Angela Hartnett at the moment. Having just finished dining on hogget broth and roasted brill at Merchant's Tavern, we're now booking a table at her latest venture, Café Murano. This little, 'brassier' sister to Michelin-starred Murano is all about quality Italian food in a pared-down environment. Head chef Sam Williams plates up the region-focused menu with dishes such as wild boar fettuccini, roasted monkfish with golden raisins and sausage stew. And for the cicchetti-inclined, there is a 12 seater dining bar for just that.
The men behind Zuma, Roka, The Arts Club and Coya are taking us to Mexico via Mayfair. Their latest restaurant Peyote has bucked the street food trend with a more sophisticated offering of Mexican fare – think cactus salads and octopus ceviche. And if you're after a stiff drink, the 100-strong tequila and mezcal menu steers from the national favourite of margaritas (though there are some) to cocktails such as Gringos (tequila and plum bitters) and Negritas (Tequila, Aperol, Sweet Vermouth). Want to take it up a notch? There are always flights of shots. Viva la Mexico! |

The Bar at The Rosewood London |
SEE:
Bob Dylan, Mood Swings |
Chandeliers and roaring fireplaces matched with curries and casseroles – say what? An odd match, we agree, but before you say gastro-pub, this is old school glamour meets modern design. Think comfortable sofas, soft glowing lamps and long bar seats sans strict dress codes or stuffy hotel staff. And the food follows the same principle. Comfortable and hearty with modern elements befit this four-star hotel. But word to the wise – the menu may change as may the name – is it The Bar or Scarfes Bar? The jury is still out. |
Bob Dylan is on our radar – but this time he's swapped his guitars for a blowtorch. His latest exhibition Mood Swings will showcase iron works, original paintings and signed limited editions by the muso-turned-artist. The highlight of the exhibition: gates welded out of vintage iron and metal parts. Inspired by Dylan's childhood growing up in iron ore country and imbued with stories from their previous life as wrenches, roller skates, and lawn tools. The gates are also up for sale, so if you want some art (and need a gate), head to the Halcyon Gallery. |

Prada Oasis and Damien Hirst's Pharmacy Juice Bar |
In lieu of the potential closure of the Prada Marfa shop having been classified as an "illegal outdoor advertising sign" (damn the man!) – we have good news – and it heralds from Doha, Qatar. The Prada Oasis and Damien Hirst's Pharmacy and Juice bar is part of a major Hirst retrospective, entitled Relics. The Bedouin tent has been re-imagined as his Notting Hill restaurant of yesteryear—but instead of Young British Artists filling the space the occupants are just two human skeletons. And sitting pretty next door in a bayaat shaar is Prada store, Prada Oasis. Selling a range of 20 Hirst-accessorised Entomology bags emblazoned with insects. #UJloves |

Location |
Anyone remember Cantaloupe back in the day, right off Great Eastern Street? We do. This has now taken over that space. Same old Victorian warehouse, very different interior. |
Vibe |
Love the bar here! We talked to not one, but two people while waiting for our dinner guest. Big news in the London dining world. Friendly crowd, chic bar, amazing cocktails (best Bloody Mary we've had in recent memory; the quest continues…). Potato skins in a copper cup were served with drinks, and the whole room buzzed in the way that only a new hotspot does. People are having a good time here (the couple beside us drank three bottles of wine at dinner – nice!). This seems like the perfect winter spot. |
Flavours |
This is one meat-heavy menu, but we're definitely not complaining. We also haven't been to a restaurant recently where we've had to ask so many questions – which is a good thing. Challenge the Junkies! The starter bread was dangerously good… we had to sit on our hands. Menu highlights include starters of Hogget Broth with Pearl Barley and Toast – the perfect antidote to the rain – and Scallops with Crushed Pumpkin. For mains, we continued on the soupy note and had Cod with Chicken Broth and Leeks, plus a dinner portion of Bavette with Chargrilled Potato and Leek Salad. Yum. The Mallard with Mustard Greens and Treviso with Figs and Sour Dough looked good; the Roast Pork Neck for two, interesting. Dessert was all about the cheese. |
Décor |
We love a booth, especially when it's round. Add in gentleman's club colours – deep reds, forest greens – wood, soft lighting and mini lamps, and consider many UJ boxes ticked. Other highlights include the open kitchen (Angela was there on our eve), table spacing (not too close, not too far), and slick (extremely professional, knowledgeable and not overbearing) wait staff who blend into the surroundings. This is one big dining room, though – something we're seeing more and more of. UJ recommends a corner table for a hawk eye view. |
Upshot |
This is a great addition to the increasingly grown up Shoreditch (the last time we were in this venue we were definitely not eating Hogget Broth). One of our foodie friends rightfully called this a 'chef-y' restaurant (thanks to its complicated dishes and ingredients). When they're executed this well, we're on board. |
