Wine Not?

It's the vine-volution

If you've been out lately, you have probably swapped your Cab Sauv for a Volnay, lined up for a 7 Rue de la Pompe instead of a Mahoosive cocktail and replaced your crystal with a plastic stemless Govino glass. Because now more than ever, fine wine is spilling onto the streets.

Tom Harrow (aka WineChap) has been leading the way a while, turning the usual stiff wine events into fun happenings: tastings at Polpo, Battle of the Bottles, or how about some Burgundy Breakfasts? Then came Ruth Spivey challenging us to "taste our way out of the supermarket", and taste we have. Remember the Wine Chile stand off? Five hours, ten reds – done! Her Wine Car Boot sales have us rubbing shoulders with independent dealers directly (take that Tesco), and her latest Street Vin pop up has divorced fine wines from white linen.

And now, the vine-volution is in full swing. Crops of boutique wine bars and shops are dousing the hoi polloi with the tipple – but forget the usual rules. We welcome Sager + Wilde's grilled toasties with our Barolo, while up the road in Dalston L'entrepot serves up boutique selections in a friendly warehouse dining space, and The Remedy Wine Bar flies the flag for the Slow Food movement and organic wine without any goop. And news just in – the guys behind Experimental Cocktail Club are branching into grapes with wine bar Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels. Plus last weekend, wine was the talk of the town via the TOAST Wine Sessions; the city's latest crop of bright young winos turned up to talk, taste and mingle, from Sager + Wilde to Tom Harrow and Daniel Willis, we all got schooled – sip, swish, swallow – got it.

Now, we somehow need to get the grapes into clubs: fine wine, Pacha podium – wine not?

UJ INVITE: LIANNE LA HAVAS AND SWIM DEEP

CONVERSE #GETWINTERIZED

To wrap up their #GetWinterized events, Converse is heading to New Cross House on Saturday November 30 to throw a toasty outdoor gig. Music maven Lianne La Havas is set to perform a live, not-to be-missed acoustic set, and up and comers Swim Deep will also take to the stage. Forget summer festivals, this event has all the makings of an unforgettable night: think food courtesy of Mother Flipper burgers, hot toddies thanks to Sailor Jerry, art installations, and (of course) fellow Urban Junkies to party with. This is your last chance to party, #GetWinterized style, and we're betting it's going to go off with a bang!

We have 20 pairs of tickets to give away, just fill out our competition form.

Converse #GetWinterized COMEDY NIGHT

UJ Party Roundup

Last Friday we hung out with funny man Adam Buxton and a good looking bunch of Urban Junkies readers, Converse friends and more at a Comedy Night in Abbey Tavern's winterized beer garden. The venue was a sight to behold, all two tiers full of glittering fairy lights and knit bombed lamps. Everybody kept warm with complimentary gloves and sheepskin throws, and the drinks kept flowing all night long thanks to the wait staff. The laughs were accompanied by Sailor Jerry's winter warming Hot Chuck Mules (a UJ fave) and Phileas Hog's moreish pulled pork and sweet potato baps. Hope to see you next week!
