Confirming the whispers, The Basement Bar at the Ace Hotel has opened. London's answer to The Amigo Room, expect a revolving door of the Shoreditch mafia: last week Daniel Willis (of Clove Club) and Mr Pedro (of Chop Shop) took to the decks and this weekend Jocks and Nerds are having their ninth issue launch. Plus, joy to our ears: it's open 'til 3am.

FRIDAY

EAT:
EMBER YARD
  PARTY:
Smokey Tails

We spread the rumours and now it's for real, Ben Tish and Simon Mullins (Salt Yard, Dehesa, Opera Tavern) have taken to the coals – Basque and Italian-style. A custom built charcoal grill will be responsible for the tapas-style dishes such as smoked beef burgers with chorizo ketchup, hake with smoked vinaigrette and smoked bream carpaccio with blood orange and botargo. Refreshments also come via the smoker in the basement bar – smoked sazeracs all round.   Now that smoking is back on our radar, we're hitting up old favourite Smokey Tails at their new permanent home in Haggerston. We loved their all-smoked menu and now we are welcoming some new winter additions. Think hickory wood-smoked pulled pork brioche buns served with pickled red cabbage and pan smoked brisket slices. But that's not the only good news. The new digs come with a dance floor… fingers crossed for some live DJ Troxler sets.

  PARTY:
Kitsuné's Winter Edition

Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels – the collective behind the Experimental Cocktail Club are replacing their usual cocktails with grapes. And, being Experimental, it's not about the usual drops but rather a frequently changing menu of original wines made by small producers. Expect a 400-strong wine menu from the traditional Petrus and Chateau Margau to rising stars such as the Azienda Gulfi and the Terroir Al Limit. And if you need some sustenance, try the truffled ham or burrata with pumpkin seeds and pomegranate.   Vauxhall's Fire has been re-launched and giving us a reason to make a trek is Kitsuné's Christmas party, wrapping up its London club nights for the year. Flit between the six dance floors and ten arches and expect to party to deep bass, house and electro with headline acts from garage house legend Todd Edwards, Two Door Cinema Club and UJ fave Horixon (Andrew Armstrong from Monarchy's new project). Word to the wise: Fire may be re-launched but expect the same ethos – hot, sweaty, and no-holds barred.

Colette x Art Basel: "Art Drive-thru"

UJ is heading to Art Basel, and our first pit stop is Colette's Art Drive-thru. Designed by homegrown architect Rene Gonzalez, expect his futuristic style blended with some Colette quirk. Something to talk about

Forget the usual Crimbo socks and jocks. This year fill up the stockings with some conversation starters, literally. The school of life is saving us from awkward silences with 100 Questions: A Toolkit For Conversations. And if that doesn't get the chatter flowing, grab Playboy's 60th edition featuring Kate Moss, and see what Gran has to say about that.

LOUGHRAN GALLERY PRESENTS ONE
  Drink:
Satan's Whiskers

Get your Sunday art fill this weekend at the Loughran Gallery's latest exhibition ONE. Celebrating the gallery's first anniversary, Loughran has taken over the NEO Bankside space, and like any good birthday bash they've brought some names. Featuring artists Damien Hirst, Dave White, Harland Miller, Marc Quinn and Lara Carew-Jones, expect hand finished and limited edition originals with a standout 15-metre work by impressionist Jessica Zoob. Plus, if you have a spare wall or two, they're all up for sale.   "A neighbourhood bar making tasty drinks with a penchant for old school hip hop" – we're intrigued. Under a neon red sign, the new kid on the Bethnal Green block is all taxidermy, leather booths, and bang up cocktails. From the team who brought us The Hemingway and The Hunter S, sip some stiff drinks by way of Apple Jack Rabbits (Calvados, lemon, orange juice, maple syrup) Salty Dogs (vodka, grapefruit juice and pink salt) or stick to the namesake, (Italian vermouth, French vermouth, gin, orange juice, Grand Marnier and orange bitters). Hip hop and cocktails on a Sunday – bring it.

EMBER YARD

#UJOUTANDABOUT

Urban Junkies were in party mode on Tuesday, heading to Ember Yard to celebrate the restaurant's launch. Taking over the basement bar, guests enjoyed canapés from the charcoal menu, with everything from chorizo skewers to basque sliders served up smoked-style, yum! The food was washed down with cava cocktails, Tuscan wines and (our favourite), a vodka, prosecco, elderflower and violet cocktail, topped off with dramatic wisps of cherry-infused smoke. When can we go back? Plus, there's 50% off food at Ember Yard 'til Sunday, so drop by and check it our for yourself.

CAFÉ MURANO

Angela Harnett, Take II

Location
Nestled in the heart of St James's Street, a block away from the neighbourhood's other foodie favourite, Gymkhana.
Vibe
Riding the trend of upmarket establishments billed as taverns/cafes/eating houses, the vibe here is decidedly more formal than your local café. Expect a mixed crowd of theatre-goers, young professionals eating at the bar, and older clientele who call Mayfair home.
Flavours
Angela Hartnett is all about Italian flavours. Here, head chef Samantha Williams serves up hearty Northern Italian cuisine, executed in line with Hartnett's signature Michelin-starred flair. We started off with truffle arancini, which was decadently aromatic with a satisfying crispy vs. creamy texture. The antipasti menu has options for carnivores and vegetarians alike – try the warm octopus, chickpeas and pesto for rich flavours that pack a punch. Sadly, on our visit the slow-cooked wild boar fettuccine was still (slowly) cooking, so we opted for risotto Milanese with ossobuco; the saffron risotto was indulgently buttery, while the tender veal fell apart at the touch, the perfect antidote for a cold London evening. Likewise, the wild mushroom gnocchi featured the lightest pasta pillows we've ever eaten. For dessert, the panna cotta – its creamy texture delicately offset with caramelised orange – was a standout, while the zingy green apple gelato (churned daily) was saturated with flavour. As for drinks, the cheery bar staff are masterful (the Gin It was a UJ fave), and wine lovers can enjoy an extensive, 100 plus wine list. We'll be back to try the wild-boar fettuccine.
Décor
This is Angela Hartnett's empire at its most relaxed. Though the interior is luxe, with a gleaming marble bar and oversized mirrors, cosy leather banquettes, plush bar stools and warm chandelier lighting make Café Murano a place you can easily settle into.
Upshot
Refined Italian food in Mayfair that won't break the bank.

Café Murano, 33 St James's Street, SW1A 1HD.
