Camden Lock Night Markets

It may be Christmas time but forget about Mariah Carey tunes and generic festive hoopla. This year Camden Lock Market is doing Christmas their way, meaning their own radio station in the Camden Lock Market Hall, a pop up bar from the Disappearing Dining Club and a full house of independent shops, stalls, eateries and cafes. Get there tonight for live broadcasts by DJ Norman Jay, winter drinks from the Camden Town Brewery and some Christmas cheer of the non-tinsel variety.

EAT:
ON THE BAB
  DRINK:
RUM KITCHEN CARNABY

Welcome Shoreditch's latest K Town fix (don't worry Jubo, we still love you), On the Bab. Classified as anju – the Korean trend of pairing traditional food with cocktails – the new 30-seat eatery gives more than just a nod to the cuisine. Expect classic sharing dishes such as Pajeon (spring onion seafood pancakes) and Yangnyeom (fried chicken) alongside On the Bab originals such as Kimchi Arancini and Koba star Soondubu Jjigae (seafood stew). Plus, go from K Town to K Pop with their extensive Korean cocktail list. We say stick to the traditional soju or get the party started with somaek, the Korean version of the Jägerbomb.   It's time to put the lime in the coconut! Bringing the good time vibes of its sibling branch in Notting Hill to the West end, Rum Kitchen Carnaby is all about fresh and boozy concoctions – think rattle skull punches (punch with spices and fruit) and rumbustions (coconut, spices and rum), to name a few. And just like its sister site this location features music curated by director DJ Fast (from the Fun Lovin' Criminals); expect some of the Rum Cellar beats to make it to the Carnaby decks. For food, we're loving the Kingly Court additions: swordfish sandwiches with spicy tartar sauce, crispy pork belly and watermelon and mango salads.

The Haggerston Hop

UJ Roundup

We've done the Shoreditch shuffle but now we're feeling the pull of the Haggerston foodie tide. Get your sea legs at newly opened Mussel Men on Kingsland Road, where fresh British produce is teamed with lashings of prosecco, cocktails and thumb wars. But if you're after some winter comfort, it's hard to go past newly opened Tonkotsu East – with a ramen-centric menu similar to their Soho outpost, but with some East only additions (try the Tsukemen, thick cold noodles and an intense hot broth, tick and tick). Then for some cold cocktails, live DJs and American barbeque staples, head directly opposite to Smokey Tails. And, finally round the corner (and under the same railway arch) is Trip Kitchen & Bar. The latest from Selin Kiazim (former head chef of Kopapa), this is modern Turkish cuisine; a notch above the usual kebab and pide offerings. Our tip? Book in for brunch.

EAT:
AUGUSTUS HARRIS
  DRINK:
LITTLE RED STAIRCASE

In between the pizza shops, burger spots and pubs, we welcome Covent Garden bàcaro Augustus Harris. Unlike the other neighbourhood offerings, it's small (just 35 covers), intimate and boutique. It's inspired by typical Venetian osterias, meaning simple dishes. Go here for ciccheti displayed on a copper bar, and a light crostini menu with pickings of mackerel, pickled red onions and finocchiono salami. The wine list is entirely Italian and cocktails are simple – Americanos, negronis and bellinis. Mid-shopping pit stop- we think yes.   If you're still waiting for Duck & Rice to open, have done your time at Flesh & Buns and love a Ho Chi Minh sling, head down to Little Red Staircase. The latest in a crop of Asian-style bars, this little addition at the bottom of Shoreditch's Viet Grill is small, intimate and moody. Modeled on old cocktail bars in Saigon, the cocktail list leaves no pun unturned, from the Me Love You Rhum Time (rum, palm syrup, smoked bitters and artichoke tea), and Pham Fatale (vodka, ginger beer, and coconut water), to the Viet Royal (plum wine, jasmine tea and prosecco). And the best bit: bar snacks come courtesy of Viet Grill.

BRUNCH:
JACKSON + RYE
  SEE:
COLLIDER AT THE SCIENCE MUSEUM

We've got a lot of love for Richard Caring, ever since he opened Grillshack down the road from UJ HQ earlier this year. Now, his latest Soho venture Jackson + Rye, an all-American, all-day (8am-12am) restaurant, has us truly excited. Here, breakfast and brunch are the main stars with highlights such as creamed grits, cheese melts, hotcakes with bacon, and scrambled eggs mixed with smoked salmon and country style fried potatoes. There's also a cocktail-heavy menu with brunch appropriate tipples – think breakfast sours and hard shakes.   From breakfast sours and hard shakes… to subatomic particles. The latest exhibition from The Science Museum, Collider tells the story of the Large Hadron Collider. And for those not up to speed (if you are you'll get the joke), the Hadron Collider was instrumental in discovering the Higgs boson, a missing piece of the puzzle for the Big Bang theory, and a very big deal. This exhibition explains all of this–with the help of Hollywood: think a film scripted by Olivier-winning playwright Michael Wynne, stunning visuals by Finn Ross (who also worked on The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) and a cameo by Brian Cox. And now all together… it all started with the big bang…
