Welcome baaaaaaaaack! It may be hard getting back into the (rainy) swing of things, but this weekend we're starting off with some Vietnamese nosh, then getting a culture fix via the London Short Film Festival. There's also some apartment therapy, DJ action and Italian street food thrown into the mix. If that's not enough, you can always jet off to Mexico, olé!

International Pick I: Day Zero

LET THE SUN SHINE

If you didn't get to Tulum for NYE, and are sick of seeing the LDN> MEXICO status updates coming through- it's not too late. This Saturday sees the second year of Crosstown Rebels' Day Zero festival, taking place in the jungle amidst Mayan pyramids and lakes, in Playa del Carmen. UJ faves including Damian Lazarus, Infinity Ink, Simian Mobile Disco, Thievery Corporation, Tiga, and TEED will be in attendance, and we hear that the sun may come out to play, breaking the rain spell that the area is currently seeing. Lakes, pyramids, tunes, rays and good company…time to look at flight schedules.

Day Zero: Year One Saturday January 11 | Tickets from $70 | Chanolandia, Playa del Carmen

FRIDAY

EAT:
HOUSE OF HO
  SEE:
LONDON SHORT FILM FESTIVAL

Renowned chef Bobby Chinn is pulling out all the stops with his first London joint, House of Ho. Injecting some spice into Soho, the restaurant is all about modern Vietnamese sharing plates (think Lemongrass Monkfish in Caramel Sauce or Duck a la Banana Blossom Salad). Wash down the bold Asian flavours with a drink or two from the inventive cocktail list (UJ recommends the Nam Fizz: lemongrass shochu and prosecco).   Had your fill of Boxing Day blockbusters? Head to the London Short Film Festival, which is taking over 25 venues with 300 short films, with panels and parties thrown into the mix. Our pick of the flicks is Friday's opening night feature The Punk Singer (a documentary about Bikini Kill front woman and riot grrrl Kathleen Hanna). Films are screening everywhere from Hackney Picturehouse to Roxy Bar and Screen. Somebody pass the popcorn.

EATS EVERYTHING AT XOYO

If you're over your apartment looking like an Ikea catalogue, head to West Elm, the Brooklyn-hailing interiors emporium that's just thrown open its doors at Tottenham Court Road. And Breathe

Pure O

If you feel like you need a pick me up after the lack of light you saw this Christmas, then head for an Oxygen facial. Created by Dr Erich Schulte, this is one facial that takes skin regeneration seriously. You will be cleansed, massaged, and vacuumed (or so it feels), pumping a serious oxygen glow into your skin. The spa feels quite medicinal and it definitely has a unisex vibe, so no need for men to be shy. This is serious skin business.

EAT:
STREET FOOD SUNDAYS AT CAFFE CALDESI
  BOOK NOW:
CHECK ON & DEAD DOLLS HOUSE PRESENT SUNDAY DINNERS

Street Feast (returning January 17) and Night Tales may be on hiatus, but you can still get your street food fix at Marylebone stalwart Caffe Caldesi. Kicking off this Sunday, the Italian favourite will be showcasing roadside bites from Naples, Puglia, Emilia-Romagna and Venice. Think snack-sized dishes like Mozzarella in Carozza (deep-fried mozzarella, basil and anchovy sandwiches) and croche (potato cakes filled with smoked provolone and prosciuotto cotto), accompanied by Prosecco and regional wines. Yum.   UJ fave Dead Dolls House has teamed up with hip pop up eventsters Check On for a series of Sunday dinners. Expect a carnivorous affair, with four courses based on the meat of the day (chicken, beef or pork). It's your Sunday roast amped up, with dishes like rolled roast pork with fennel stuffing and black rice pudding on the menu. With three Sundays to choose from and tickets at an easy-on-the-wallet £25, gather up the troops and book in now.
