Weekend Guide

This weekend's shaping up to be a big one. We've escaped the depths of TFL drama (no tube strike, hurrah!), love is in the air and the style set is coming to town. Otherwise, there's seafood, drinks in bathtubs, and a Byronic breakfast on the menu. From the owners of the Chateau Marmont comes a new Marylebone hotel, there's an all nighter in Camden, or a daytime bash in LA. Party on!

FRIDAY

EAT:
ASSUNTA MADRE
  DRINK:
The Fable

Things are starting to get fishy. Joining the trend of fish-focused restaurant openings this year comes Assunta Madre. The famous Rome seafood joint (we hear De Niro and Tarantino are fans) has landed in Mayfair. It's sticking to its M.O. of plating up super fresh fish, sourced from the restaurant's own fishing vessels and the renowned Terracina auction. Choose your dish from the large aquarium and expect seafood served up all ways, from tuna tartare to shrimp gnocchi and ceviches straight from the iced fish counter.   Check out The Fable, Farringdon's latest (themed) addition. From the brains of Drake & Morgan (the guys behind The Folly, The Parlour and The Anthologist), The Fable is an all day bar and restaurant inspired by fairy tales. Spanning three floors, the venue boasts everything from glass terrariums to wishing wells and cocktails served up in bathtubs… We say visit for yourself to decide whether this is a case of The Emperor's New Clothes or not.

LFW at Selfridges
  PARTY:
Housekeeping at Koko

It's that time of year again: the LFW circus is coming to town. Get in on the action at Selfridges, where they're celebrating the best of British design with pop up shops and exclusive offerings from London's bright young things. Simone Rocha is popping up in the Shoe Gallery with a shop and a shoe created just for Selfridges, Marcus Lupfer has designed two denim dresses exclusively available in store, plus Sadie Williams is livening up the Toy Shop with limited edition Barbies dressed in her signature tomboy-meets-princess style. Who needs the catwalk when you've got a bright yellow bag in hand?   Openings in Ibiza may be a while off (hurry up, May), but here's the next best thing. Following a summer residency on the White Isle and their sellout Envy night last year, The Housekeeping crew is back, taking over Koko in Camden for the second event in their Seven Deadly Sins series. Expect the club to be kitted out OTT-style by Made Up Productions, the guys behind events at Ushuaïa, Amnesia and Pacha. Titled Lust (it is Valentine's weekend after all), the night will see the Housekeeping boys on decks playing deep, tech and funky house.

SEE:
Richard Hamilton at the Tate Modern
  PARTY:
Chiltern Firehouse

Prolific artist Richard Hamilton has finally landed a retrospective at the Tate Modern. The exhibition explores the 60-year career of the founding father of pop art, from his radical 1956 installation Fun House – a room adorned with pop culture artefacts like movie posters and magazines – to his iconic Swingeing London 67 series, which depicts Mick Jagger handcuffed during a drug bust. Fun.   Legendary hotelier André Balazs is shaking up the hotel scene with his first London venture, the Chiltern Firehouse. Opening in the midst of LFW, it's shaping up to be the hangout of choice for the style set (watch out, Berners Tavern), so stop by for a drink to check it out for yourself. Located in a Victorian fire station, the boutique hotel boasts 26 cosy suites with an NYC feel. As for the restaurant, Viajante's Nuno Mendes will be in the kitchen, serving up dishes with an American slant. Now all we need is London's own Boom Boom Room and we'll be set.

INTERMISSION

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas at The Vault Festival
Adapted and directed by Lou Stein

In a sentence
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas goes underground.
Location
Down the road from the now-closed ( for a rumored Topshop, boo!) Old Vic Tunnels. The Waterloo Tunnels are the same shtick – follow the graffiti covered underpass and enter the cavernous vaults under Waterloo station.
Rundown
Think Hunter S. Thompson's cult novel-turned-film, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. You know the drill: road-tripping madcap adventures, LSD-fuelled vivid hallucinations and Gonzo journalism. But this isn't a West End production. Instead, expect bench seats, sand beneath your toes à la the Nevada Desert, and not a tub of ice cream to be seen. It's fun.
Highlights
The acting is stellar, we loved the Ralph Steadman illustrations as backdrops and projections, the stage centrepiece Chevrolet Caprice (prompting many a "no photos please"), the Rolling Stones and Jefferson Airplane good-time score, and the real life Terry's Taco Stand – two for a fiver (rather than the scripted five for a buck – we blame inflation).
Upshot
It's Vegas baby!
