You know how it is: too many books, not enough time. Enter 2014, when you can get your literary fix live on stage. From West End adaptations to underground and independent playhouses, cult novels are going live.

Setting the tone for the year ahead was the surprising sell-out show American Psycho – The Musical, turning Bret Easton Ellis's sadistic satire into a bold musical. We expected disaster; we were wrong. Punchy tunes, costumes by Mr Porter and a lead act by Matt Smith – we expect a West End revival. In the meantime, this month the Almeida Theatre welcomes an adaptation of George Orwell's 1984 – and with five stars from The Guardian, The Times, Telegraph and The Independent, prepare to join the returns queue.
Continuing the trend, the plays headlining The Vault Festival have been adapted from two novels. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas ticks the boxes for pop culture and mass appeal, while literature aficionados should stick to Ian McEwan's The Cement Garden for its detailed and serious interpretation.
Alternatively, if you're looking to tick some Booker and Pulitzer winners off the list, Penelope Lively's Moon Tiger is currently on tour, and later this year, the controversial triple Tony-nominated The Testament of Mary is set to leave Broadway for the West End. And if you want to take a break from the playhouse, To Kill a Mockingbird starts its second summer season (after last year's sell-out) at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre: cue champagne and picnic blankets.
Finally, looking forward to 2015, Harry Potter is heading to the West End, but traditionalists be warned: the play tells the untold story of Harry Potter's early years as an orphan and outcast. Now, it's bets on for who will play young Harry. |
