Spring is finally here! Even if the clouds didn't get the memo, there are a lot of reasons to be out and about this weekend. On the line up there's a dance floor with surround sound (literally), an unusual cuisine to tick off the bucket list and a bar that's (almost) as good as a Caribbean getaway. Now get out there and have some fun.

AFTER HOURS

There's always room for dessert. Following a sell out run last year (featuring pastry chefs from The Fat Duck, The Ledbury and Opera Tavern), After Hours is back with a four-course dessert tasting menu. Taking over Ozone Coffee, Adam Degg, Head Pastry Chef at Wild Honey in Mayfair, will whip up a Dark & Storm Baba (rum baba, ginger granite, lime cream & compressed pineapple), Apples & Gingerbread (caramelised apples, gingerbread ice cream and crumbs, parsnip mousse, apple compote) and more. Yum. |

PARTY:
DESPACIO |
|
Kick off the weekend by visiting Hackney's newest canal-side opening, Number 90. The 500-capacity venue is a one-stop shop, with food, drink and art under one roof. Opening weekend sees a street food showdown, with head chef Leon Borja whipping up a Brazilian-inspired feast, Hanoi Kitchen providing Vietnamese nibbles and Thank Cluck plating up fried chicken. Charlie McFarley's subversive cartoons will take over the gallery, and the music's covered courtesy of Marksman, Lois & The Love, Road to Nowhere and The Vinyl Factory. Fun. |
|
We're still not over LCD Soundsystem disbanding, but luckily frontman James Murphy has other projects in the works. Despacio sees Murphy join forces with David and Stephen Dewaele (Soulwax/2ManyDJs), and is all about a custom made sound system (think amps in 11-foot stacks surrounding the dance floor) pumping out an all-vinyl selection of disco from the DJs' vast collections. Tickets have been selling fast so grab some before they're gone! |

EAT:
MARANI |
|
DRINK:
DUB JAM |
|
We can't say we know much about Georgian cuisine, but Marani is about to change all that. The newly opened restaurant focuses on the flavours of the Silk Road, melding Indian spices with Middle Eastern ingredients and a French influence. That translates on the menu to dishes like seared foie gras with aubergine and walnuts, khinkali dumplings or suma-crusted salmon with chestnut purée. Wash that down with wines made using the traditional Qveri method (fermented in clay jars), or shots of infused chacha. |
|
For some more international flavour, head to Dub Jam, a BBQ and rum shack that's bringing the Caribbean to Covent Garden. The drinks have top billing here: from Red Stripe to Carib Lager, Sarsaparilla to coconut water, there's a bit of everything to quench your thirst. We say go for Dub Jam's signature punch, which is literally fed through the restaurant's wall of speakers for genuine reggae sound waves and bass filtering (or so we're told). Try some of their beach BBQ fare while you're at it: think jerk skewers and burgers with coffee-cured bacon.

EAT:
POPPY'S PLACE |
|
SHOP:
THE VILLAGE GREEN |
|
We love a bit of all-day dining, and Fulham newcomer Poppy's Place is getting in on the action with a farm-to-table focus. By day, the restaurant serves up breakfast and brunch (croissants or hot smoked salmon with horseradish), while the lunchtime menu features soups, salads and fresh toasties on artisan bread (think beetroot, cheddar, spinach and red onion). By night, Poppy's is all about steaks, sourced direct from Lake District farmers, and daily specials such as grilled market fish with olive oil mash and gremolata. |
|
Get your shopping fix at The Village Green market. Returning to Hackney Downs Studios, the market boasts wares from local businesses including The Naughty Little Card Shop, and bicycle specialist The Hackney Peddler. Should you work up an appetite, food stalls (Terrone Coffee, Brookes and Jones baked goods) have you covered, and The Signature Brew Boys will be on hand with craft ales. Hackney Downs' niche boutiques like Portamento, Multemyr, Atomica Gallery and Smoking Gun Vintage will all be open for business, too. |

CHILTERN FIREHOUSE |
|
The house is on fire…. |
|
|
|
1 Chiltern Street, W1U 7PA | Website |
|
Location |
In the old fire brigade building in Marylebone's Chiltern Street, the fire station-turned-hotel and restaurant has elevated the neighbourhood from its yummy mummy status to hotspot haunt. |
Vibe |
Sleek, buzzy and notably fashionable. Like Chateau Marmont, it will probably have a steady flow of A-listers – in part due to its hush happenings during fashion week and the celeb status of owner André Balazs; having Michelin-starred Nuno Mendes in the kitchen probably helps too. |
Flavours |
With Nuno Mendes at the helm, the menu isn't about concept or molecular dining (not a drop of foam to be seen) but rather beautifully presented, classic dishes with a few twists. Starters range from trendy fried chicken to more creative crab-stuffed donuts, but our squab with chicory and red currants was a strong favourite. Onto the mains, we went for fishy options: the monkfish cooked over pines with barley and fennel was fantastic, while our maple-glazed salmon was fresh with hints of sweetness and crunch. But surprisingly, it was the humble side of spinach that stole the show – creamy, fresh, but with a hint of tobacco spice, a must-try. And lastly, points for the cocktail list for putting vermouth back in the limelight – five options with fresh twists from grapefruits, lavender, cucumber, pomelo and mandarin – goodbye vodka tonic. |
Décor |
If nouveau rustic were a term, this would be it – dimly lit via hanging lights, warm red and cream hues with homely large carpets and rattan chairs in the main dining room. The buzzier mezzanine gives way to a slicker vibe, thanks to the handsome open plan kitchen – if you're a party of two, reserve a spot on the kitchen counter and watch Mendes work his magic. Downstairs – the bathrooms lead to a 'secret' outdoor bar – ladies, enter through the door marked "cigarettes and men" via the slightly more mysterious "wine…" scribed door. We'll be heading back there for some post-dinner cocktails. |
Upshot |
Although no tables are reserved for walk-ins, they will be for hotel guests when the rooms open end of the month – so if friends are visiting, recommend the Firehouse – and bag a table out of it. |
