If you thought ballet was all tutus and tights, get ready for a whole new experience. Arriving at the London Coliseum this week is The Prince of the Pagodas, an intriguing Japanese fairytale retold by Birmingham Royal Ballet. Designed by award-winning War Horse designer Rae Smith, choreographed by David Bintley, with a score by Benjamin Britten and a stripey Salamander in the title role, this new production has been described as 'one not to miss' by The Independent and a 'visually stunning' production by What's On Stage. EAT:
EDWINS
  SEE:
SCREAM EDITIONS

Sure, Borough Market is overrun with food options. But there's a new brasserie on the block: Edwins, an intimate 40-cover restaurant serving up modern British cuisine. With Selim Massouf (Riding House Café, Village East) in the kitchen, the restaurant is all about seasonal produce. Expect grilled seafood bouillabaisse or guinea fowl with brussel tops and butterbeans. The drinks are in good hands, too (Edwins was founded by the guys behind Parched Pubs): we love the Pear and Cardamom Side Car (pear cognac, Cointreau, cardamom syrup and lemon zest).   Now for some art. Scream Editions has launched an online print gallery, as well as a pop up bricks and mortar version just off Carnaby Street. With live screen printing sessions and original prints from heavyweights like Tracey Emin, Charming Baker and Pakpoom Silaphan up for grabs, it's a one stop shop to building your contemporary art collection, or simply jazzing up your blank walls. Tate Modern, eat your heart out.

GROOMING PICK

RUFFIANS

You know we love a barbershop with soul, and Edinburgh transplant Ruffians is the latest joint on our hit list. Its Covent Garden flagship is all exposed brickwork and pewter armchairs, with a log fire and a coffee and whiskey bar. Pop in for a haircut or a cut throat razor shave from the experts, and check out the bespoke men's grooming products. Plus, we hear that poker nights are on the agenda, too.

EAT:
Q GRILL
  WATCH:
YVES SAINT LAURENT

Smokey Tails, The Blues Kitchen, and now Q Grill…the wave of BBQ joints in London just keeps on coming. Des McDonald's latest venture is throwing open it's doors in Camden this week, soft launching until Sunday with 50% off food. Take your pick from moonshine battered shrimp, Josper rib eye steak or smoked kielbasa hotdogs. Wash down the raw, grilled and smoked dishes with drinks via the Deep South: think US bourbons, whiskeys or root beer floats.   The September Issue, The Devil wears Prada…we love a bit of fashion on film. Yves Saint Laurent, the latest offering to hit the big screen, explores the life and love of the inimitable French designer. Saint Laurent's tumultuous love affair with Pierre Berge - his lover and business partner - forms the main narrative of the film, though there are plenty of Dior gowns and Le Smokings in the mix, too. Somebody pass the popcorn.

PRE-PARTY

COAL VAULTS

We've known about Coal Vaults for a while - great sharing plates and killer cocktails – but now we have another reason to keep going back: we've discovered their vaults act as the perfect pre-party spot. From the private-ish vibe of the enclaves that seat up to ten (possibly more), the individual speakers (UJLoves), and let's not forget its Wardour Street location, we've finally found a new drinking den. And that's always news worth sharing.

SUNDAY

BRUNCH:
CLUTCH
  PARTY:
EARL SWEATSHIRT

Feeling hungry? Head to Hoxton's best-kept brunch secret, Clutch. The chicken shack serves up more than ethically sourced wings: try the Clutch It Up (chilli scrambled eggs, halloumi, roast tomato and guacamole) or the Bend it like Benedict (poached eggs, turkey bacon, and hollandaise sauce). Turn it into a boozy affair with a Bloody Mary, mimosa or prosecco. And watch this space…we hear that Clutch is going al fresco, with a Gareth Pugh-designed outdoor canopy to be installed in the restaurant's secret garden this summer.   If you missed Earl Sweatshirt's sellout tour last year, cancel your plans to chill out on Sunday night and head to his show at Electric Brixton. Having found fame as a 15 year old member (!) of Tyler the Creator's hip hop collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, he will be performing tracks from his debut studio album Doris - expect complex rhyme schemes set to energetic beats. Grab tickets now.

HOLBORN DINING ROOM

252 High Holborn, WC1V 7EN | Website

In a Sentence
Brasserie fever hits Holborn.
Location
As the City is to bankers so is Holborn to barristers, so a grand British brasserie in the otherwise Starbucks, Lebanese takeaways and Krispy Kreme populated 'midtown' hood, works. And as with Marylebone, it's on our radar.
Vibe
Located in the Rosewood Hotel, Holborn Dining Room is part of the new-gen hotel scene. The crowd, although a mix of the suited and booted (and the odd hotel guest), doesn't feel like a corporate card restaurant. Instead, the dining room has a cheerful buzz, in part owing to the fact that all tables were full the night we dined (a Tuesday), always a good sign.
Flavours
Led by Des Mcdonald (previous head chef of the Ivy), the concept is rehashed British classics divided into eight digestible sections: bar snacks, cold counter, hot counter, grill, English kitchen, sides, sandwiches, and afters. We started with the pressed ham hock with piccalilli and sourdough which was good by gastro standards, but fans of shellfish should go for the roasted langoustines, fresh, soft and smothered in garlic butter, while the crispy lamb sweetbreads should be for meat enthusiasts only (they are, after all, a bowl of glands). The mains: lamb chops with bubble and squeak and hock and coq pudding follow the same principle - nothing flashy or trendy - but homey, comforting and cooked to perfection. Afters wise, the steamed treacle and whisky pudding with custard was the best we've ever had - big call, we know - but we're happy to go back for another taste test.
Décor
Being part of the Martin Brudnizki portfolio means it was going to be anything but low-key. Red leather banquettes, marble pillars, and industrial chandeliers dominate the sweeping dining room. Although an open space the distinct sections help to give it some intimacy: standalone islands, counter-top dining, booths, and an open charcuterie bar – a UJ favourite.
Upshot
By day it also serves deli favourites through a window, from salt beef on rye and roast beef sandwiches to the wild boar hot pots, and Irish stew. Say goodbye to the lunchtime Waitrose dash.
