SET IN STONE |
It's all about the fixed menu |
Remember when set menus were once reserved for "groups of 10 people or more" and cringe-y Valentine's and pre-theatre dates? Well, that's no more. As part of London's young foodie revival, 'prix fixe' has gone from shameful whisper to insta-cool. Fresh chefs have evolved the set menu, with some even dedicating their entire restaurants to it, and it's trending.
It all started with Clove Club. Their three-course set menu restaurant of innovative dishes was nothing to be sniffed at. Fast forward one year and another Young Turk is feeding the trend. James Lowe's new restaurant, Lyle's, features seasonal British cuisine in a daily set dinner menu, and it's a little stricter, with no extended or vegetarian menu to be seen (disclose all dietary requirements when booking). Opening one week later: Beast, from the people who brought us Burger and Lobster, with a £75 set menu featuring steak and crab as the hero dishes, with seasonal sides of your choosing.
But for those who want a little more choice comes the pick'n'mix menus, meaning a set price AND a selection of dishes. We noticed it first with Canvas by Michael Riemenschneider, where there's a selection of 16 dishes (choose as many starters, mains or desserts as you prefer). Alternatively, for those who want some decisions made for them, Claridge's newbie Fera (helmed by Simon Rogan) offers only set menus, but with four choices per course, as well as two tasting menus: 10 courses for £95 and 16 courses for £125.
Lastly, Typing Room in the Town Hall Hotel (Viajante's replacement and Jason Atherton's newest baby), opening this week, has a limited à la carte menu with their six- and eight-course tasting menus as the main stars.
The only question left to ask your waiter is: à la what?

The new play from the award-winning Polly Stenham (That Face, Tusk Tusk, No Quarter) is a tropical thriller where nothing is quite what it seems.
Secluded, isolated, the perfect desert island escape. Just what Robert and the family need. But beyond the white sand and beautiful sunsets, dark clouds gather. A storm is coming.
