ISLAND LIFE |
From private islands to public playgrounds |
Private islands are the domain of the rich and famous no more. Lately, we’ve been getting a taste of the high life via the introduction of festivals, restaurants and resorts on private islands. Whether you’re looking to party, dine, or catch some R&R in style, here are the elite escapes to add to your summer itinerary…no private jet necessary.
For a hedonistic bank holiday weekend, the only way is Essex. This month sees the inaugural Drifters Festival on Osea, a privately owned island in Blackwater Estuary- and the place for those in the know. Brought to you by the guys behind The Rum Kitchen, Love Brunch and Ping, the bespoke festival takes full advantage of the island’s luxe features, with opulent accommodation (the cottages boast four poster beds and private butlers), and headliners including DJ Yoda and Alex Fast.
Next, to Ibiza’s most exclusive address: Tagomago Island. Only accessible by boat, Tagomago – one of the few private islands in the Mediterranean- is an insider favourite for its Balearic beauty. If you don’t want to drop €40,000 to rent out the entire island (complete with private helipad, outdoor jacuzzis and DJs on hand), get a taste of the action by booking a table at the island’s chiringuito beach bar instead. An innovative Mediterranean menu, exclusive atmosphere and luxury service: check, check and check.
If you really want to get away from it all, The Brando is the ticket. Once Marlon Brando’s private sanctuary, the 12-island atoll off the coast of Tahiti now plays host to a luxury resort, opening this July. With 35 eco-friendly villas (all featuring individual plunge pools and private beach areas), The Brando also boasts a restaurant courtesy of Michelin-starred chef Guy Martin, plus a spa fringed with coconut palms.
Time to pack your bags. |
