Football season may be in full swing, but here at UJHQ, we're mostly just hyped about Brazil (caipirinhas and pool parties, yeaaaah!). With that in mind, we've got some São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro 'eat, sleep, rave, repeat' tips, courtesy of our Brazilian insider (thank you Victoria). But for those staying in London, Hackney and Brixton are where it's at 'hood wise. And culturally, we're going into Meltdown. Have fun!

"Nobody knows us. They think they do. But they don't."
On the eve of the Met Ball, in a world of champagne and canapés, the five Colby sisters are the glamorous faces of New York high society. With wealth, style and desirable husbands, they appear to have it all.
But privately, the sisters' squabbles distort the picture of this perfect family. Image is everything, and struggling to maintain it could have life-changing consequences.

A new black comedy by OBIE award-winning Canadian playwright Adam Bock.

Number 90 |
A pop up bar in an old hardware shop… yep, we're starting the weekend in East London. Hackney Hardware, the latest cocktail offering on Hackney Road, forgoes the usual stripy straws and milk jars for hammers and screws in their new (…but old) ramshackle bar. Here, you can expect cocktails, wine, and beer alongside simple dishes of pork pies, sardines on toast and charcuterie platters. Get in before they close up shop in August. |
With the news that the weather is meant to be (semi) decent, we say head to the newest canal-side terrace in Hackney Wick. Launching this weekend, the multi-arts venue Number 90 is set to open their terrace with Brazilian smoothies and cocktails from the outdoor bar, a pop up barbeque pit, and live DJs. Plus, we hear this is a football free zone, so if you're looking to escape the fever… |

EAT |
For food, São Paulo is second only to Lima as a foodie destination, providing some of the best restaurants in South America. Case in point: Alex Atala, the chef behind one of the world's best restaurants, D.O.M., is revolutionizing Brazilian cuisine. Here, it's all about blending French and Italian culinary techniques with native ingredients. Can't get a table at D.O.M? Try his more low-key offerings, Dalva e Dito or the adjacent Mercadinho Dalva e Dito. Keeping to fusion but turning to the Japanese community (Brazil is home to the largest Japanese population outside of Japan), Geiko-san blends Japanese and Italian, while hip hangout Banana Sushi combines Japanese bites with the sweet flavours of Brazil. For Nikkei dishes outside of Chotto Matte, Osaka is a must-try.

MIDSUMMER TERRACE PARTY |
If you're in the mood for a 90s throwback session, head to the Brixton Academy tonight. J5 will be hitting the stage for their signature beats and rhymes alongside British hip hop stalwarts Harry Love and Taskforce. Expect their now retro-infused songs to take over the arena – hands in the air for some Concrete Schoolyard action. Tickets are still available, but be quick. |
Keep in the Brixton 'hood and head to The Prince of Wales for their Midsummer Terrace Party. Party on the sprawling terrace to live sets from Fatima & The Eglo Live Band, The Menendez Brothers and African-influenced The Busy Twist (to name a few). And helping with the summertime vibes, expect a barbeque, circus acts (?) and, er, a hot tub… |

Done with São Paulo? Time to party with Cariocas in Rio de Janeiro, and currently it's all about pool parties, so keep your ear to the ground for those. Names to watch out for in the music scene: Manie Dansante remixes 50s tracks with electronic beats, while Amazing Disgusting brings established names to the Brazilian electronic scene, and Bota na Roda, the 30-strong crew, throw some of the most creative parties in town. For live music, head to city centre Lapa where the streets are literally alive with the sound of music. And if you want to get a handle on the city's newest trend, get involved in a favela party in Rocinha e Vidigal or any of the newly pacified slums. Lastly, check out one of the many fashionable bars that have remodeled themselves on Brazil's multicoloured, hillside residences and try some cachaça shots.

512 Hours |
This week, we welcome new kid on the Spitalfields block, The Culpeper. An English pub by pizza makers Forza Win and head chef Sandy Jarvis (previously at Terroirs), it's is all about traditional British and French provincial cuisine: think fried pig's head, fish 'n' chips and seasonal salads. On weekends come here for their weekend-only brunch menu featuring dishes such as Harissa eggs, Spanish tortillas and a traditional fried English. Plus, being run by Forza Win alum, there's a roof terrace that come July will be the setting for weekly picnics. |
Join the queues for a chance to see Marina Abramović live at the Serpentine Galleries. A brand unto herself (a cameo on SATC, a musical dedicated to her life and a namesake institution), the artist has crossed the pond to takeover the Galleries. For 512 hours, the 67-year-old performance artist will 'invite' 160 guests each day into the space (first come, first serve) for a typical Abramović experience, meaning, uncomfortable. Expect audience engagement, complete silence, and to leave all your worldly goods at the door (phones, watches, cameras…). |
