The Secret's Out |
Forget the days of big secret productions and standalone speakeasies, the new era of clandestine drinking, dining and partying has evolved. In London, the latest crop of secret happenings are within the busiest of places. From 'it' restaurants and new nightclubs to street feasts and 'special guests' – the secret is out, you just have to find it.
We start with the crème de la crème, Chiltern Firehouse. You know the drill. The 2014 restaurant du jour may be in everyone's sight but behind the buzzing restaurant and familiar faces, there's a party going on in the Ladder Shed, the invitation-only party lair in the Firehouse's VVIP bar. Here it's all about impromptu gigs, late night partying, and well, André's 'friends'. We say, avoid the door drama, book a room, and get a free bar pass.
The house party vibe continues (on a more accessible scale) with Jonathan Downey. Remember his 'yellow door' at Merchant Yard aka The Gin Store (#UJloves)? Expect another hideout at the bustling Riverside Feast. We can't say more at this point except the 'one bartender' bar will be hidden next to the Thermo King unit (pictured above)… Go fish.
Then there are the special guests and mystery performances. Every Friday night Notting Hill club MODE presents an undisclosed artist. Clues are given the day before via Facebook and tickets can only be purchased on the door. Last week it was Patrick Topping (of the Hot Creations camp) on the decks while this week, we're still guessing. Over in Ibiza, every Saturday night the Ibiza Rocks House at Pikes plays host to Idris Elba and 'Friends'. Last Saturday it was Pete Tong and now it's bets on about who will join the party in Freddie's suite. Our tip: follow them on Facebook and Twitter for the big reveal.
And finally, there's the travelling restaurant, Chateau Marmot (not Marmont). Unlike the pop up or secret menus of 2012, Marmot has adopted 'a secret rave' model. Everything is known, except the location. This week book a spot for a 'Feast of Flowers' with chef Dan Doherty from Duck & Waffle. Expect a multi-course tasting menu of edible flowers, an intimate set up (only 16 seats), and a TBC Waterloo location.
So, if you want to check out the secret party, at the secret bar, after the secret gig, you're going to have to crack the secret first.

Get off the Hollywood track with director Adam Wimpenny's British horror, Blackwood, starring Ed Stoppard. Having recovered from a shattering emotional breakdown, he relocates to a new countryside home, Blackwood, with his wife (Sophia Myles) and young son (Isaac Andrews), hoping for a fresh start.
But Blackwood is far from peaceful, as Ben is haunted by visions that seem to connect to the house's previous owner. Also starring Russell Tovey and Paul Kaye, this is a tense thriller that will have you gripped until the very end…
