Shaken vs. stirred, wet vs. dry, all with different vermouths and garnishes – yes, it’s the age-old cocktail, the martini, and 2014 is all about the classic. So forget about the cosmopolitans and lychee martinis of yesteryear, this summer Belvedere has teamed up with the Royal Academy of Arts to bring us a curated experience entirely dedicated to the stiff drink. And just like the martini, it’s a stylish, high-gloss affair.
Let’s start with the interactive exhibition. Here it’s all about learning about the evolution of the martini, from gin through to vodka via still life images (which includes a “match the legend to the martini” experience… #UJLoves), videos, and a musical score – all done by a selection of cutting-edge names in photography, set design, film and music.
Next, drink the drink. Purchase a ticket to the accompanying tasting bar and sample a flight of miniature martinis; you can try tasters of the different variables of the cocktail. Wet, dry and the bespoke ‘Reverse Vesper’, yep, try them all.
Lastly, hit up the evening bar. Our favourite summertime space just got better with the inclusion of a Belvedere martini pop up, where selections of the cocktail will be available. Plus, the late(ish) closing time of 10.30pm means after-work martinis at the RA. Fun! See you there.
