American Playoffs |
And the hotel scene continues. But amongst the buzz of the new wave of home grown boltholes – Ham Yard, Beaumont, Hoxton – we’ve been noticing increasing movement by American power players: Balazs vs Schrager vs his ex (Morgans Hotel Group). It’s officially a hotel playoff.
First, Andrè Balazs. Having opened Chiltern Firehouse earlier this year, which followed the same model as his Chateau Marmont digs (a live-in Lohan and VVIPs), Balazs' British expansion continues. Next year, he is set to open hipster mainstay The Standard in Kings Cross. Expect the usual trimmings & rooftop, Grill and a more accessible door policy, but it will be in the new gen-Kings Cross, so a simple place to rest your head, this will not be.
Next, Ian Schrager and his London EDITION hotel. It may have lost some ‘it’ points since the opening of Chiltern, but Mr Schrager is no one-hit wonder. Doing the reverse of frenemy Balazs, EDITION is planting its flag in America. Taking the concept to Miami for a November opening, don’t expect an identikit of London (think brand, not chain). The Miami twist features bungalows, with all the Schrager essentials of a bar/club/restaurant plus a private beach. And, unlike London, this EDITION comes with apartments to buy, each dedicated to the “the good life”…
Lastly, everyone loves a battle between exes… and in the hotel world it’s all about Schrager and his company of yesteryear, Morgans Hotel Group. And this ex isn’t taking anything lying down with two openings in the pipeline: London and Vegas, baby. The first, the Mondrian, will shake up the South Bank scene with its trendy Dandelyan bar and rooftop terrace in the Sea Containers building. Then, also opening in September, is the Delano Las Vegas hotel where The Strip meets South Beach. From the ‘Beachside Casino’, ‘Beach Club’ and ‘Daylight Beach Club’ (think Ushuaïa-esque pool parties – you get the picture), this hotel is a bikini-clad party animal but hey, when in Vegas…

As you know, vitaminwater’s latest pop up on Brick Lane shinebright studio has been giving fuel to the up-and-comers from music, art and fashion. For seven weeks (July 31-Sept 10), the shinebright studio is a revolving door of workshops, exhibitions, and mentoring sessions (look out for Jamal Edwards' and Rob Da Bank’s on August 14 and 15). Our top pick for this week’s activities – the Razzle Dazzle exhibition by Bread Collective. Head there for a new look into an age-old ‘dazzle camp’ photography technique used in both World Wars. Finally, photos that don’t involve a #. |
