FRIDAY

EAT:
One Two Five Church Street
  DESSERT:
Eric Lanlard at Paradise by way of Kensal Green

One Two Five Church Street, the latest coffee shop with a double identity, opens this weekend. From the people behind The Blacksmith and Toffeemaker pub in Clerkenwell, this Stoke Newington café-to-bar is set to serve a casual menu of coffee and cakes by day before switching to boozy cocktails and tunes at night. But what has us most excited? Surprisingly, it’s the sandwiches: American-style melts, meatball marinaras and Cubans.   If you haven’t hit up Eric Lanlard’s dessert takeover at Paradise By Way of Kensal Green yet – now’s the time. The celebrity master pâtissier (of channel 4 series, Glamour Puds and Baking Mad) is finishing a week long takeover with eight desserts. Expect tarts from all over the world: from the English earl gray to the Japanese matcha & yuzu and West Indies chocolate, followed by the classics: hot chocolate soufflés, cheesecakes and iced berries… as they say, leave room for dessert.

SEE:
Frieze London
  PARTY:
XOYO Loves

It’s that time of year again. Frieze is back. Pray for rays and head to the free Sculpture Park to see the 20 exhibitors, including Martin Creed, Yayoi Kusama and Franz West. Re-fuel at Caravan’s pop up restaurant and bar before checking out the Frieze projects - don’t miss Nick Mauss’ ‘living stage’ on which a new ballet will be performed each day. Alternatively head to The Other Art Fair at the Old Truman Brewery for up-and-coming artists, interactive theatre and the Dirty Burger and Crate Brewery pop ups.   If you missed June’s installment of XOYO Loves held at Dalston Roof Park (followed by the after party at the club itself), then you’re in luck because XOYO is set for another blow out, this time at Electric Brixton. The night starts with deep house thanks to Casino Times and Bodhi, followed by headline acts Shadow Child, Groove Armada and then some hits via special guest Chris Malinchak – and by hits we mean this one.

Spring 1944 - seven Soviet soldiers have been captured by the Nazis, stripped naked and abandoned in the locked empty cellar of a monastery in southern Poland. Powerful, thought-provoking and darkly funny, David Ian Lee’s The Curing Room comes to London after a hit Edinburgh run.

SUNDAY

Brunch:
Ippudo London
  Eat:
The Fish and Chip Shop

As we said, ramen is on our radar. Welcome Ippudo to the noodle belt. A newbie to the UK but an old-timer thanks to its 100 restaurants across Japan, New York, Sydney, Hong Kong and Singapore, the Hakata style menu is said to be made up of ramen soups (classic and vegetarian), à la carte dishes (Japanese pancakes, Wagyu sirloins and tofu stew), plus some fusion (Japanese-style fish and chips, panna cotta and mascarpone). Refreshment wise, we recommend sticking to the Japanese menu of craft beers, sake and shochu.   Des McDonald’s posh fish and chips have expanded to the City. This Fish and Chip Shop is slightly larger than its Islington counterpart with an alfresco area and bigger menu, from a raw bar and lobster grill to the more interesting items such as ‘monkfish vindaloo’. And if you’re a fan of the original menu, good news, most of the items have made the jump, too – fish pies, roasted seabass, and, of course, the cult fritters.

TOAST X The Lockhart

Good Lard Almighty, it’s time for some Southern food. But banish thoughts of deep fried and barbequed everything and instead get ready for a family style feast of chef Brad McDonald’s cornbread, gumbo, smoked short ribs and grits – and, of course, fried chicken (had to be done). Plus, there’ll be talks by writer Tim Hayward together with McDonald, bourbon cocktails, American wine and donuts.

TOAST x The Lockhart, Monday 20 October, 22-24 Seymour Place, W1H 7NL.
Tickets are £65 and are available at www.eatdrinktoast.com.
