The Only Way Is East |
|

Here at UJHQ we get around a bit… Ibiza, Los Angeles, New York. But lately, our flight paths are taking new routes. We’re hanging out in Seoul, getting fashion fixated in Beijing and hearing the beat of Singapore. Yes, we are officially going east.

Seoul
Okay, okay, we know – K-pop, Gangnam Style, karaoke… but, it’s the post-PSY era and we too have moved past the kitsch bangers of yesteryear. Now, Seoul is feeding our soul (sorry) with its cool neighbourhoods and design-led infrastructure. From hipster Hapjeong where the streets are filled with cold brew hole-in-the-walls and artisanal ice creameries (scoop of strawberry red wine with Szechuan pepper anyone?) to the luxury neighbourhood Apgujeong complete with a Rodeo Street (yes, really). Design wise, there’s plenty (it was World Design Capital in 2010) but its pièce de resistance is Dongdaemun Design Park and Plaza – Zaha Hadid’s newly opened shiny, studded futuristic hub for design, technology, fashion and art. And in true SK style, the plaza is open 24 hours. New York and Tokyo, the torch has officially been passed.
Beijing
Ahh China. Shanghai may be the glitzy “Paris of the East” but for concept shopping, we’re looking to Beijing. It all started with Dover Street Market’s I.T Beijing Market – think Dover Street Market, but bigger (19,000 sq ft bigger to be precise). And down the road, but in the same neighbourhood of trendy Sanlitun, is SANLIPOP. Opened in March by five London College of Fashion alum, the shelves are a cool mix of products and heritage labels from UK, US and Asia (think Opening Ceremony, Band of Outsiders, Mackintosh and St James), while the décor is a gallery-like space of raw materials and exposed brick complete with an in-store espresso bar. Finally, the wallpaper has all but gone up for 10 Corso Como’s Beijing flagship, due to open at the end of the month.
Singapore
As for music, Singapore is shaping up as the eastern capital of the Electronic Dance Music scene. November will see the maiden voyage of ‘It’s The Ship’ – Future Music Festival Asia’s answer to Holy Ship. A Royal Caribbean Cruise Liner with 3,800 passengers and 30 acts will take to the sea from Singapore to Langkawi for five dance-filled days. And it’s not just about the parties. The International Music Summit (held annually in Ibiza and LA) has just announced a Singapore addition on December 11 - nine hours of talks and networking hosted by Pete Tong. And the next day? Get ready for ZoukOut – the electronic festival for party-goers across the Asia Pacific held every year in Singapore. |
