Style over substance |
We know, we know, consumerism in the capital has been in overdrive. Colette’s art drive-thru, Chanel supermarket sweeps, Anya Hindmarch Frosted Flakes, Moschino Happy Meals… and it shows no sign of waning. In fact, it’s gone up a gear. Convenience stores are the new galleries, tin cans are cool, and cereal is set to hit the big time. |

CornerShop |
Tinned beans, ciggies, Spam…no longer just a grocery list. Now, thanks to modern day Warhol, Lucy Sparrow, and her one-month takeover of the derelict Cornershop last September, they’re works of art – complete with a Birkin-esque waiting list. Missed the pop up but want to display a loo roll? We hear the 4,000 hand-felted groceries may be making their way to the Big Apple. Fingers crossed for a London opening…

TINCAN |
From fashion to art and now food – welcome Tincan, the trendy Soho pop up with a fishy USP: canned seafood… and nothing else. Expect all the traits of a restaurant: table service, waiters, reservation, and a bar – but with its kitchen-less facilities, all black interior, and gallery display of colourful tins, it's more concept dining meets consumer packaging. |

Cereal Killer CafE |
Following in Tincan’s footsteps, but taking it up a notch, December will see the arrival of the Cereal Killer Cafe in Shoreditch. Same concept, different product. Expect 100 different brands of cereal, new, old, international, collectables…you get the picture. We’ll be there for the 12 variations of milk. |

Anti-packaging |
And, flip reverse. On the other side of the consumer package trend comes anti-packaging. Leading the movement is Berlin’s concept-grocery store, Original Unverpackt. The idea is as follows: no packaging on anything, from fruits and vegetables to body lotion and olive oil. Think BYO meets DIY. |
