The Original Oatly BREAK-FEST Serial presents

Early mornings: snooze buttons, chilly temperatures and breakfasts-on-the-go – it’s safe to say, we’re not big fans. Until now. Thanks to the makers of Swedish oat drink, Oatly, and their unique BREAK-FEST Serial of events across the capital, our AMs are getting a much-needed shake up. Think stimulating debates, coffee training and raves… all before midday. To kick off the BREAK-FEST Serial, Oatly will be presenting a Philosophy for Breakfast on Sunday, 16 November at The School of Life. Expect a philosophical slam as two thinkers, Robert Rowland Smith and Mark Vernon bounce from topic to topic as demanded by the audience – and, of course, an Oatly breakfast spread.

|
DINNER:
Old Tom & English |
|
DRINK:
Turntables |
|
For those who like their Brit classics – battered fish and chips, Welsh rarebit, black pudding – book a table at Old Tom & English. Ring the doorbell and settle into the 1960s Lee Broom-designed living room, with its post-modern furniture: think vertical wood panelling, retro mirrors and tube lights. Cocktails also come by way of the mid century: think barrel-aged gin, ‘Highgate’ negronis and gimlets, all served from sideboards, revolving cocktail cabinets and bar carts. |
|
Now to Hackney Wick for the first weekend of Turntables, a canal-side (but undercover) winter street fest. Expect six weeks of bars (beer stands, cocktail and hot toddy bars), food shacks (The Cheese Truck, Popdogs, Mother Flipper, White Men Can’t Jerk…), fire pits and, of course, entertainment: live broadcasts, DJs and live sets. Oh, and a checkered dance floor. |

EAT:
Som Saa |

PARTY:
Gorgon City |
|
We’re still craving Thai food. Can’t get a table at Smoking Goat in Soho? Try Som Saa in London Fields (though we suspect tables here may also be slim pickings), where Andy Oliver (of The Begging Bowl and Nahm) takes charge of the Isaan menu. Dine on salt roasted red prawns, aubergine salads and pork curry with pickled garlic and ginger before sampling some kaffir lime G&Ts or Muay Thai Kicks (gin, Thai basil, lime, sugar and basil seeds). Alternatively, head here for a Sunday brunch and try the rice porridge and Climpson & Sons Thai coffee. |
|
Oh, Gorgon City, we can’t get enough of you since THAT flight… so naturally, we’re ready to kick our heels up and party like it’s VA 787. The electro duo, Kye Gibbon and Matt Robson-Scott, are set for a huge headline show at The Forum tonight, meaning expect nothing short of an all-night shakeathon. Not familiar with their brand of funk induced sample tracks, club remixes and chart smashes? Have a listen here. |

UJ Loves Chris Bracey

We’ve always been huge fans of Chris Bracey and his fun, bright neons. So it was with great sadness that we learned of his passing last week. Although a great loss, his shining legacy lives on at Gods Own Junkyard. |

BRUNCH:
SUNDAY RESIDENCIES AT HILL & SZROK |
|
CHILL:
Barber & Parlour |
|
Hill & Szrok, our go-to for a Sunday roast, has been doing something a bit different lately. As of last Sunday, the cookshop has been playing host to a series of guest ‘residencies’. Last Sunday was all about offal; today, the main order is simple, rustic Italian. And giving a helping hand in the kitchen will be Tim Spedding (of Michelin-starred The Clove Club) with libations courtesy of Italian wine experts Tutto Wines. Boozy brunch, sorted. |
|
End your weekend with some preening, Soho House style. Their latest mark on the Shoreditch ‘hood, Barber & Parlour, is a 3-floor barber, parlour… and cinema. Ladies, head to the refurbed Cheeky Parlour, and men, to the brand new Neville Barber. Want to hang together? Grab a stool at the Kitchen or House Press juice bar before taking in a movie at Electric Cinema downstairs. |

DO NOT DISTURB |
|
The Hoxton, Holborn |
|
|
|
In a Sentence
Hoxton + Midtown = Hoxtown
About
Finally, a reason to head to Holborn. Apart from being a viable option to rest your head (central location at a reasonable price tag), this is a place you want to hang at – and trust us, we were ‘midtown’ skeptics. Boozy meals, cool coffee shops, and a cheeky parlour: The Hoxton, Holborn, we’re fans!
Décor
As with The Hoxton, Shoreditch, expect nothing short of the cool, east-end vibe – exposed concrete here, a brick wall there – yet, it feels like home with its antique furniture, comfortable sofas and rugs – we especially loved our wallpaper, designed by two local designers and inspired by the local area. This isn’t a place made for a quick drop in: once inside, expect to settle in. Our ‘Snug’ room was just that: comfortable, warm and cosy. That said, we weren’t quite sure where the suitcases would go, so if you’re staying a few days, go for the Comfy or Roomy options.
Restaurants
Here it’s all about the ‘friends’ of ‘The Hox’. There’s the Chicken Shop in the basement and a ‘Brooklyn-style’ Hubbard & Bell café, bar and grill on the main floor – both are fun, loud and boozy. Our dinner at Hubbard & Bell was standout (we’ll be going back for the beef tartare and grilled chicken). Want something lighter? Head next door to Holborn Grind for sarnies, salads and lattes.
Top Tip
Ask for a late check out. After 12pm it’s charged by the hour (£5). Bargain! Oh, and don’t forget to look at the monthly programme of happenings in Hoxtown.
Info
A stay at The Hoxton, Holborn starts from £69, including taxes. To book, call 020 7661 3000 or visit www.thehoxton.com.
