This weekend seems to be all about new family members. From The Ivy’s ‘informal sister’ and Happiness Forgets’ ‘second son’ to The Dairy’s ‘latest offspring’ and José Pizarro’s MEATliquor ‘lovechild’ there’s clearly something in the air. Besides the family affair, we’ve got a new coffee and negroni bar, Asian bars aplenty and five new breakfast spots. Enjoy.

FRIDAY

DINNER:
The Ivy Market Grill
  DRINK:
Bar Termini

An informal sister to The Ivy is the principle behind The Ivy Market Grill. Open from breakfast through to supper, settle into the plush, dark green banquettes and elegant décor (high ceilings, hanging lights, exposed surfaces), and navigate through the extensive menu – one of the biggest we’ve seen. Expect everything from grilled whole lobsters to Kellogg’s All Bran. Can’t make up your mind? Stick to the ‘Three Martini Lunch’: a Gibson, Vesper and dry vodka martini. Bon app.   If a good Negroni is your thing, head straight to Bar Termini. Here, the menu starts at 7.30am with Italian brewed coffee by Marco Arrigo (University of Coffee). Sit in with a side of pastries or make like the Milanese and go standing with the espresso al bar. From 11am, it’s cocktail hour via Tony Conigliaro (69 Colebrooke Row and Zetter Townhouse) – with house Negronis, a list of five aperitivi (including our new favourite, Marsala Martini) and, of course, a selection of small Italian plates.

EAT:
Fan Tong
  DRINK:
Original Sin

Fusion may usually be a no-no but now that Asian is firmly in the air, we’re willing to try this one out. The menu of ‘mostly Chinese’ food goes like this: fish with green cabbage and miso, Sichuan spiced pork, braised pork belly, and soy braised chicken. And then there’s the fusion side of things: beef and pork meatballs, spicy pork ragu and roast potatoes with spring onions and chilli mayo. Drinks wise, there’s Chinese tea and mocktails, all of which can be spiked – simply choose your poison.   Now for some proper cocktails. From the guys behind Happiness Forgets comes their second venture, Original Sin. Here, things are a bit different. Focusing on creating a ‘neighbourhood’ bar, the boys (Ali Burgess and Andy Bird) have put together a more accessible drinks menu. Expect a short but sweet cocktail list that includes highballs (cheaper than cocktails but more exciting than a G&T), a free-to-play pool table and, if it’s anything like its alma mater (ranked 12th in the world), the perfect date spot.

BRUNCH:
The Manor
  WATCH:
Hockney

We never tire of a good brunch spot, so today we’re checking out The Manor. Opening down the road from its sister restaurant and local favourite, The Dairy, The Manor will be serving up a more robust modern bistro menu. Dine on aged hanger steak with scorched bone marrow and roasted onion tea, or suckling pork shoulder with braised head, morcilla and squash, followed by Granny Smith apple parfait with meringue and brittle sorrel. Alternatively, try a bit of everything and order the tasting menu.   Time for a Sunday culture kick. Head over to the Curzon Mayfair and settle down to watch the hotly anticipated ‘Hockney’. Randall Wright gives us a fresh insight into the life of one of Britain’s pre-eminent living artists, including his working class childhood, sexuality and Hollywood. With unique access to Hockney’s personal archive of photography and film, this isn’t one to miss.

ON OUR RADAR

Asian bars

Dishoom King’s Cross

From sake highballs at Night Elm to kaffir lime G&Ts at Som Saa, right now, it’s all about Asian bars. Want to feed your Kung Fu addiction while downing some Wong islands? Head to London’s first Chopsocky bar, PimpShuei. Want swankier? Try Peony inside Opium (that’s right, a bar within a bar). Think 25 covers, a carefully crafted cocktail list and handmade dumplings. Lastly, there’s Dishoom’s Permit Room in King’s Cross. Aside from the impressive décor, we can’t get enough of their bottled cocktails, especially the Sir Jeejeebhoy (a bottle-aged old-fashioned). You can come here for the drinks alone, but if you need a bite, well, you’re in the right spot.
