Cracking up

Fried chicken may have come first, but now it seems eggs have cracked the market. And we’re not talking about your regular ‘with avo on toast’ kind either. Rather, a new wave of eggsperts (sorry…) are showing us the sunny side of breakfast, lunch and dinner

We first noticed the post-midday egg at Los Angeles’ Eggslut. Inspired by the ‘slutty’ eggs doing it all ways, we’ve since been snacking on pimped-out scotch eggs from Scotchtails and brunching at Yolk, a pop up serving six eggtastic dishes from classic Benedict recipes to not-so-classic haggis ones.

But things are getting serious now. Neil Rankin (of Islington’s Smokehouse) is egging us on at his new diner, Bad Egg. From spicy Morrocan and Malaysian sambal telur to Mexican huevos rancheros and Korean kimchi hash, it all sounds, well, eggcellent.

And news just in, Pop up The Good Egg has started a crowdfunding campaign for a soon-to-be restaurant in Stoke Newington. Headed up by ex-Ottolenghi chef Oded Mizrachi, expect classics from around the world (shakshukas, egg and aubergine pitas and even steak and chips) all washed down with craft beers and cocktails.

Sounds like a cracking good time!

Fans of classical music, this one’s for you: Tuesday 27 January at the Royal Festival Hall join the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Charles Dutoit, for an evening of macabre music featuring the music of Berlioz, Liszt and Bartok. Berlioz sets the scene with the Hungarian March from Damnation of Faust. Then joining the Orchestra is the acclaimed pianist Marc-André Hamelin, set to perform Liszt's Piano Concerto No.2. A haunting tale of gruesome dark secrets are then gradually unveiled as Bartok's dramatic opera Duke Bluebeard's Castle is performed by the acclaimed Hungarian opera singers Andrea Meláth and Balint Szabó. A concert not to be missed.
