Now onto the next EC1 newbie, Medcalf Traiteur. The cosy add-on to sister restaurant Medcalf at no.38 Exmouth Market has a simple Italian menu and a big USP: no formal kitchen. Instead, dishes such as slow cooked pork belly, butterbean and chorizo stew, and salt beef with sauerkraut are prepared on the Big Green Egg barbeque. SATURDAY EAT: Zinnia DRINK: Beaver Lodge A new Japanese restaurant has opened in Chelsea and it’s a big ‘un. Taking over an entire Georgian building, Zinnia is a restaurant/bar/party lounge hybrid. Warm up in the bar with whisky and sake cocktails, then head into the restaurant for Japanese robata classics: yakitori chicken, kohlrabi, and miso black cod, before descending to the slick lounge for some champers and bottle service – we are on Brompton Road, after all. Champers and bottle service not your tonic? Cross the border to Fulham and into the world of cowboys and mountaineers. Beaver Lodge is as you would expect: waiters are cowboys, tables are cabins and cowhides are everywhere. Here it’s all about picklebacks, bourbon-laced cocktails and, well, more picklebacks. For anyone that’s been to their Marylebone store, expect the same stylish (but not ‘trendy’) aesthetic of classic peacoats, soft corduroy shirts, tailored trousers and a strong focus on materials (e.g. Shetland lambswool, cashmere sourced from Scotland, and heavy leathers from Portugal and Italy). And when you’ve finished shopping, grab a chair at the in-store café, order an Ozone coffee and relax – it’s Sunday. For those who missed last year’s Malevich retrospective at the Tate Modern, head to the Whitechapel Gallery. Starting with Kazimir Malevich’s black square shown in Russia 100 years ago, the exhibition chronicles modernism 'and its utopian aspirations and breakdown’.
