We’re midway through January and the polar vortex is in full swing (not really – it’s just really, really cold), so this weekend is all about finding some warmth. From a farmhouse kitchen and a beaver lodge to an all-in-one restaurant/party spot and an indoor exhibition, we’re staying inside! But don’t worry, bourbon, lots of wine and a bit of shopping are all part of the agenda. |

DINNER:

DRINK:
Medcalf Traiteur |
Clerkenwell has always been a foodie haunt, so we’re making a beeline for its latest two openings, starting at 155 Bar & Kitchen for Euro and US-inspired small plates. This means a focus on sharing, which we always like: think Greek-style grilled octopus, snails with chorizo, parsley and garlic, and mussels with smoked pancetta and cider, all paired with new and traditional wines. |
Now onto the next EC1 newbie, Medcalf Traiteur. The cosy add-on to sister restaurant Medcalf at no.38 Exmouth Market has a simple Italian menu and a big USP: no formal kitchen. Instead, dishes such as slow cooked pork belly, butterbean and chorizo stew, and salt beef with sauerkraut are prepared on the Big Green Egg barbeque. Add the restaurant’s ‘warm farmhouse kitchen’ feel and you’ve got the perfect shelter from the cold… |

EAT:
Zinnia |
DRINK:
Beaver Lodge |
A new Japanese restaurant has opened in Chelsea and it’s a big ‘un. Taking over an entire Georgian building, Zinnia is a restaurant/bar/party lounge hybrid. Warm up in the bar with whisky and sake cocktails, then head into the restaurant for Japanese robata classics: yakitori chicken, kohlrabi, and miso black cod, before descending to the slick lounge for some champers and bottle service – we are on Brompton Road, after all. |
Champers and bottle service not your tonic? Cross the border to Fulham and into the world of cowboys and mountaineers. Beaver Lodge is as you would expect: waiters are cowboys, tables are cabins and cowhides are everywhere. Here it’s all about picklebacks, bourbon-laced cocktails and, well, more picklebacks. Long live rock 'n' roll! |

You can’t beat Damson & Co for a toasty retreat with great coffee and friendly staff. The Hoxton, Holborn may not be quiet and serious… but hey, if you wanted that you would be a nine-to-fiver. |

Adventures of the Black Square: Abstract Art and Society 1915–2015 |
Another shop pick for the boys (what can we say, LC: M left us inspired). Hip menswear label Huntergather have opened their second outpost on Redchurch Street. For anyone that’s been to their Marylebone store, expect the same stylish (but not ‘trendy’) aesthetic of classic peacoats, soft corduroy shirts, tailored trousers and a strong focus on materials (e.g. Shetland lambswool, cashmere sourced from Scotland, and heavy leathers from Portugal and Italy). And when you’ve finished shopping, grab a chair at the in-store café, order an Ozone coffee and relax – it’s Sunday. |
For those who missed last year’s Malevich retrospective at the Tate Modern, head to the Whitechapel Gallery. Starting with Kazimir Malevich’s black square shown in Russia 100 years ago, the exhibition chronicles modernism 'and its utopian aspirations and breakdown’. With over 100 artists, including modern masters from the 20th century to contemporary artists, all displaying their paintings, photographs and sculptures, this is one not to be missed. |
