We’re back! After a week’s hiatus in Ibiza, we’re hitting the London ground running. If you haven’t filled your calendar from our Culturist, well, diaries out, we have more picks for the weekend. Since we’ve been gone, a bar from “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away” has hit, The Ivy has had a facelift, and medicinal cocktails are where it’s at. Enjoy! |

The roots of the Kopparberg Urban Forest reawaken |

Last year’s Kopparberg Urban Forest is back and, this year, under a canopy in Hackney Wick. Expect a heady mix of live music, street food and drinks. Bands set to play the stage include some of the UK’s most sought after festival acts such as Ms Dynamite, Norman Jay, Trevor Nelson, Chromeo (DJ set), DJ Yoda and Submotion Orchestra. And kicking things off will be Katy B on June 10 to headline the launch night in style. There’ll be a Swedish fruit cider and beer bar, naturally, and a Frozen Fruit Cider Bar. Food wise, it’s street food galore, including UJ faves Le Bun. |
The Kopparberg Urban Forest. June 10 – June 12, free entry. Open every Wednesday to Sunday. Wednesday – Friday: 4pm-11.00pm, Saturday – Sunday: 12pm-11.00pm
37 – 41 Whitepost Lane, Hackney Wick, E9 5EN. Next to Hackney Wick Overground station. |

Rebelx Cantina |

Any budding muso will appreciate this exhibition by Julian Opie, the artist responsible for the iconic Best of Blur album. And today, Alan Cristea Gallery has opened their month long exhibition, showcasing his prints of iconic London scenes from the last three years – think tourists on the Southbank, city workers and, of course, an all too common walking-in-the-rain scene. |
A bar from “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” has hit Hackney. No clue? We’re talking about Mos Eisley Cantina bar from the first Star Wars movie, which is now in full force (sorry) thanks to the guys behind Secret Cinema. Their pop up will be, as expected, in full theme. Expect DJs, performances (lightsaber duels?), out of this world music (again, sorry) and everyone from around the galaxy doing some cosmic disco. |

EAT:
The Ivy |
DRINK:
Unleash X Flying Circus |
The Ivy has re-launched after a multi-million refurbishment and it looks superb: swanky, posh and oh so Ivy. Although it may not be about the food here (if the walls could talk…), the menu does sound good. The classics such as the Bang Bang chicken, peanuts and chilli, the Shepherd’s pie and The Ivy hamburger have survived the facelift, but the menu also includes some new fresh contemporary flavours, such as the tea smoked short ribs and Thai baked sea bass wrapped in a banana leaf. |
For a techno fuelled party outside the rave cave, book tickets to Unleash X Flying Circus. A collab by the big hit party promoters (Unleash and Flying Circus), expect a tried and true party formula. Held at Studio 338, this promises to be an all day/night dance-athon with Audiofly, Martin Buttrich and Steve Bug (to name a few) fuelling the dance floor. Tickets are still available, book now! |

On our radar: Medicinal cocktails |
Let's drink to good health! |
We first noticed them at the Apothecary Off-Licence aka London Cocktail Club in Islington – stiff drinks made with cure-alls such as ginger, honey and citrus and, of course, liquors so hard nothing could survive. The soon-to-open Culpeper Rooftop Bar, Grill and Greenhouse (see below) will be serving botanical cocktails. Taking it up a notch, Behind This Wall, has dedicated their summer residency at the Oval Space to the concept of medicinal mixology by rebuilding classic cocktails such as negronis, camparis and sazeracs with seasonal, botanical or herbaceous enhancements. Cold press cocktails, your days are numbered. |

EAT:
Joe’s Oriental Diner |
While we’re still waiting for the The Culpeper’s rooftop bar, grill and greenhouse to open (June 25), we say head to the pub for a taste of things to come: think botanical cocktails made with herbs grown on site. We’re expecting good things, the pub, after all, is named after a 17th-century English herbalist from Spitalfields. |
This just in: Joe’s Oriental Diner has moved east to The Laundry. It officially launches next Tuesday, but we hear through the grapevine it’s in soft launch mode. Dine on crab rangoon with sweet chilli dip, gai yang BBQ chicken and duck leg red curry with lychees – all washed down with frosted beer tankards ‘Frosties’ and teapot cocktails. Although it's technically open, try (if you can) to wait for the official opening next week for a foolproof visit. Patience everyone, us included. |
