TGIF, well nearly. And this weekend, we have a pick ‘n’ mix of the usual: new restaurants (tapas, more tapas and a brasserie), a couple of interesting festivals (one food, one culture), a glitter drenched party and, finally, some punch and flamingos. Plus, we have our top 5 picks for June. |

The roots of the Kopparberg Urban Forest reawaken |

Last night we ate, drank and danced under a canopy in Hackney Wick, the latest location of the Kopparberg Urban Forest. So, with that in mind, we’re already looking forward to getting our groove on to DJ Yoda and Norman Jay next week – with a Frozen Fruit Cider in hand. We say, get to the Forest early and pick from the street food stalls (Buffalo Joe’s, Mama’s Jerk Station and Le Bun, to name a few) before getting stuck into a couple of Hard Yard cocktails. Skål! |
|
The Kopparberg Urban Forest. June 10 – June 12, free entry. Open every Wednesday to Sunday. Wednesday – Friday: 4pm-11.00pm, Saturday – Sunday: 12pm-11.00pm
37 – 41 Whitepost Lane, Hackney Wick, E9 5EN. Next to Hackney Wick Overground station. |

PARTY:
Gloria’s with Tensnake |
|
A restaurant focused on meat and tapas –specifically, the prime cuts of Iberico pig – from the ex-Brindisa chef Roberto Castro, so you know you’re in good hands. Expect an all-you-can-meat menu dedicated to the Spanish pig done all ways: from secreto Iberico (the ‘hidden’ cut between the shoulder and the loin) to presa Iberico (the top shoulder) and the solomillo Iberico (fillet). Jamon jamon! |
|
Oh Gloria, you wild thing. Tonight, she’ll be bringing together the girls of the polysexual dance party Sink The Pink together with deep house Tensnake for a glitter-drenched all-night, gender-bending party to the soundtrack of, we assume, pop house beats. And being Gloria, turn up in your finest (think disco queen to everything in between) and be rewarded with free entry. |

Food stalls, local artisan producers, welcome the West London Fork to Fork food festival. Curated by Thomasina Miers (of Wahaca) and Laura Harper-Hinton (of Caravan), expect chefs from London’s best kitchens (Hix, Ottolenghi, Koya, Polpo and Moro, to name a few) plus food trucks from Wahaca and Dirty Burger, all to support the creation of an Open Air Classroom for kids. So, if you’re west, check it out. |

Social Wine & Tapas |

Mark Sargeant, the ex-head chef of Claridges (a position he held for seven years, kudos) has launched his own two-floor restaurant. Officially opening on Monday (but we’ve heard whispers it may be open this weekend), dine on snacks, small plates and charcuterie on the ground floor, and for something heavier, head up to the first floor brasserie for set lunch and dinner menus. |
|
More tapas. This time from Jason Atherton. His latest venture in London, Social Wine & Tapas, is a blend of modern Spanish tapas dishes, with British produce: Think jamon, Manchego and truffle toasties, and seafood and rabbit Spanish rice. Wine wise, expect not only a wine bar but also a tasting room and a shop! |

For those who missed last year’s run, good news: the smash hit production of George Orwell’s dystopian masterpiece, 1984, returns to London this week, playing from June 12 – September 5, 2015. Back at the Playhouse Theatre for a strictly limited season of twelve weeks only, the “definitive book of the 20th century” (The Guardian) is re-examined in this radical staging. Exploring surveillance and identity, expect to understand why Orwell’s vision of the future is as relevant now as ever. |

Cîroc at the London Riviera |
|
For those who want a taste of Latitude, sans the four-day commitment, Tanlines is for you. The first of its series, curated by Latitude, the Sunday session on the rooftop of the Ace, is as we suggested, a taster - a program ranging from music and art to film, comedy and literature fueled with a barbeque, bloody marys and frozen margaritas. RSVP now. |
|
Now for some outdoor action. Cîroc at the London Riviera, an immersive food and drink pop up on the South Bank is set to channel the vibe of Cuba mixed with a little Miami beachside: punch, palms trees and flamingos. If you’re doing a Southbank crawl (Tate, Southbank Centre, Mondrian) add this to your list. |

In A Sentence
Southeast Asian flavours with a Hallsworth edge.
Vibe and Decor
Laid back and boozy – how a ‘dive’ bar and restaurant should be. However, unlike its previous Chelsea digs, this place is big, but that’s a good thing. Its long narrow space, which continues to a courtyard (thanks to its floor-to-ceiling sliding doors) and high ceilings guarantee a cool and airy temp, even with the open kitchen firing on all cylinders.
Flavours
Casual Southeast Asian dishes in a dive may be the concept, but with Scott Hallsworth in charge (ex-Nobu chef), there’s no hiding its urbane take on classics. The Thai pork sausages were spicy, mushroom san choy boi meaty, and the pandan shrimp wraps were fragrant and aromatic. For the mains, we went with the duck leg red curry with lychees – sweet, mild and falling-off-the-bone tender. Drinks (alcoholic and non) keep to the Southeast: think lemongrass, cucumber, limes, and iced teas.
Top Tip
For those on a budget, every Tuesday for just £25pp, you can taste your way through the whole of Joe’s menu. Deal!
Highlight
It’s up London Fields way, so make the most of its location (and summer) and pre-drink around the corner up on Netil360, as we did.
