The Great British Chip Off

We’ve gone full circle around the world: from American trash food and Asian barbecues to Japanese izakayas… you name it, we’ve done it. But now it seems we’re flying the British flag, via some homegrown classics. Welcome the new wave of chippies.

Last week, we ‘snacked’ on Michelin-star chef Tom Sellers take on the classic ‘chippy’ at the three day Krug and Chips pop up: monkfish cheek curry and matchstick fries and lobster claws wrapped in potato spaghetti with tartar sauce… washed downed with Krug Champagne.

Now we’re ready for Mark Hix's FishDog residency at The Hat & Tun in Clerkenwell. Expect English seafood staples but with a Hix twist such as the breadcrumbed pollock in a hot dog-style bun with minted mushy peas and fish croquettes served with spicy mayonnaise and The Rib Man's Holy F**k Hot Sauce.

Over in Notting Hill, Chef Tim Peirson’s will be doing his interpretation at The Notting Gill Chippy pop up – think curried spiced battered fish ‘n’ chips with mango chutney and lentil dahl, savoury lobster doughnuts, and scampi battered in whisky.

Naturally, we're now craving haute chips, which is why we're ready to hit ‘Come Fry With Me’, open next week at BOXPARK Shoreditch, serving pimped up versions of the British chip: from truffle and parmesan and rosemary and garlic to marmite and Guinness battered. Not enough? Try the topped versions with steak and stilton, chilli con carne with sour cream and Greek with feta – all done to an aviation (in-fryte) theme. Oh, and it’s not a passing phase – a standalone restaurant is planned for autumn, with chips served on a ‘fry carousel’ conveyor belt, obviously.
