EAT:

PARTY:
Moth Club |
Keeping both the Nordic and smokehouse trend alive comes Rök Smokehouse. Expect Scandi-style dishes – brining, pickling and smoked meat and vegetables – with a British twist. Think pickled slaw with cabbage, carrot and fennel, duck legs with bacon and lingonberry jam and, of course, open sandwiches. It’s currently in soft mode launch (until tomorrow), with 50% off food. Go! |
From the people behind the Shacklewell Arms, The Lock Tavern and The Adam & Eve comes their latest club, Moth Club, an ex-servicemen’s members’ club in the heart of Hackney. Gold glitter ceilings, a vintage dance floor and gold foil curtains create the setting for the mix of live music and club nights, starting with a Visions Festival sneak peek pre-party tonight. The club officially opens on September 3. |

David Byrne, music and performance maven, will be on stage with band Future Wife in Young Jean Lee’s play, a life-affirming, humorous show about the one thing everyone has in common: We’re Gonna Die. Part of David Bryne’s Meltdown, Byrne will be singing the songs that respond to the monologues. Plus, as part of the festival, he’s also programmed Gob Squad’s Western Society, a live, ‘artsy, theatrey, performancey collective from UK and Germany’. They do audience participation but don’t worry, in Byrne’s own words – ‘not in a scary way’. |

PARTY:
Visions Festival |
Start Saturday night with a southern American blowout. Dine upstairs at UJ fave The Lockhart, then descend into its new bar, Showdown. Helmed by Matt Whiley aka ‘The Talented Mr. Fox’, the menu is made up of ‘sour’, ‘long’, ‘strong’, ‘weird’, ‘tap’ and ‘bottle’ cocktails and, of course shooters. In true southern style, expect lashings of rye, bourbon… and a house doughnut vodka. |
The annual one-day Hackney festival returns. From underground music and street food to craft markets, get set to flit between venues all over Hackney. The music line up includes indie pop’s Camera Obscura, garage punk girls the Hinds and disco-house wunderkind Shamir (to name but a few). Check out the craft beer and food festival (hosted by the Adam & Eve pub) in the St John-at-Hackney-Church, and the Visions Market for creative knick-knacks. |

Iris: Another Mad Outfit |
Another smokehouse. This time it’s southern and manned by DJ Yoda. Head over to Kensal Rise for smoked Texan style meat (brisket, beef ribs, St Louis cut pork ribs…) served naked or in in sliders. However, it’s the brunch menu that has us interested, with a menu of eggs Benedict (with fried oysters, pork boudin and soft shell crabs), fried oyster po’ boys and brisket hash and eggs. They had us at Cajun Bloody Mary spiced with pickled jalapenos. |
Cap off your weekend with the darling of the NY fashion scene, Iris Apfel. The fash-documentary, already available on iTunes, follows the 93-year-old “geriatric starlet” and her slow burn to success. From haggling in Queens to touching scenes with her husband (who is 100 years old), this is an inside peek into her ‘more is more’ lifestyle and iconic wardrobe. |
