HIGH SUMMER ROUND UP: ISSUE TWO

It’s the last hit of summer – with a bank holiday in sight – so get set to be busy. We’ve got a new izakaya on the scene, a pre-party Carnival warm up and party on the Carnival route. Looking to get away? The British seaside is calling. And this year, we’re combating the post-holiday blues early, by pencilling must-do dates for September, including a festival. Enjoy!

EAT

Head to Brixton for London’s latest izakaya, Nanban. Expect Japanese ‘soul’ food from Masterchef winner Tim Anderson. Stay safe and order hot steaming bowls of ramen and Japanese curries, take the more adventurous route and order sharing plates of deep fried eels, twice-cooked pig intestines, or go experimental with his mentaiko pasta (spaghetti with mentaiko carbonara sauce). Whippy sans (Japanese soft serve) for dessert.

Nanban izakaya and ramen bar, 426 Coldharbour Lane, Brixton, SW9 8LF

BOOK NOW

Soak up the last wave of festival season at Portmeirion Festival No. 6. The line up? Grace Jones, Mark Jones, Metronomy, and Years & Years are just a few names on the bill. On top of that there’ll be arts, culture, banquets and street food. As for activities, think paddle boarding, foraging, and swimming… and with only a couple of weeks, there are only a handful of bell tents left – book now.

Festival No. 6, Portmeirion Gwynedd Wales, LL48 6ER
September 3-6.

PARTY II

The Date’s Outdoor Carnival Special

Looking for an alternative to the Carnival route on Sunday? The Date’s Outdoor Carnival Special looks like a good bet, if only for its location five minutes from Ladbroke Grove. Tunes will blast from its huge Funktion 1 soundsystem with The Crazy P on decks (and a host of others) for some underground disco with deep electronic throbs and pop synths – and, of course, carnival beats. Tickets are already on fourth release, be quick!

The Date’s Outdoor Carnival Special, secret location. Sunday, 30 August, 12pm -7pm. £15.

LONG WEEKEND GETAWAY: MARGATE

Or, swap London for a dose of the British seaside at Margate. First stop, the newly renovated but still retro Dreamland: think helter skelters, rickety roller coasters, ferris wheels… you know the vibe. As for food, stick to nostalgic favourites of candy floss, sea salt ice cream and, of course, fish and chips. After-dark revelry comes in the form of PG roller discos and drive-in movies. On Sunday, Vauxhall Art Car Boot Sale will be parked in the Turner Contemporary Galleries car park. Tracey Emin, Gavin Turk, Rachel Howard, Vic Reeves and Sir Pete Black are just some of the artists who will be selling their one-off pieces at car boot prices. Get there early and stock up!

Dreamland, Marine Terrace, Margate, CT9 1XJ
Art Car Boot Fair, Rendezvous, Margate, Kent CT9 1HG, Sunday August 30, 12pm-4pm. £3.

ON OUR RADAR

From Pop Brixton to the upcoming Blues Kitchen and a few smaller openings in between (Naughty Piglets, Nanban), Brixton has come up trumps this year. And next on our radar: Phonox, the new Brixton-side bar/nightclub led by the directors of XOYO and The Nest. Expect one dance floor, one sound system and one or two DJs all night. Simples. Pencil its launch weekend, Friday September 4, in the diary.

Phonox 418 Brixton Road, London, SW9 7AY. 6pm-4am. Free before 10pm.

UJ Ibiza Magazine Issue 2 Launch Party!

In partnership with ME by Meliá Hotels

An amazing evening was had by all at ME Ibiza to celebrate the second issue of the UJ Ibiza magazine. A metallic disco theme matched the new magazine cover, while guests dined on a Japanese-inspired menu with sake pairings throughout. Fiona Leahy Design truly transformed the space into a magical metallic-land and it was great having the legend that is Jon Sa Trinxa there to accept his gift; a small thanks for being in the magazine. Thank you to everyone who helped make the night such a success. We look forward to next year!
