It’s the first weekend of the pseudo new year, and we’re being greeted with retro cocktails, Basque and Indian cuisine, and… Hammerschlagen, Oh and balloons. Lots of balloons (‘tis the ‘new year’ after all). Culture wise, we’ve got tons of new happenings and, as for parties? A new club has opened in Brixton. Enjoy!

EAT:
KRICKET |
PARTY:
PHONOX |
It’s all happening in Brixton tonight. First, dinner at Kricket. The new Indian restaurant at Pop Brixton is serving up small spicy plates such as Kadai spiced padron peppers, Keralan fried chicken and smoked aubergines. Cocktail wise, we can’t go past the carom and cardamom spiced vodkas. |
Now over to Phonox, the new Brixton-side club by the guys behind XOYO and The Nest. For the launch, Bristol-born whizz kid Julio Bashmore will be on decks for his brand of house alongside Polish duo Ptak… until 4am. East London, your days are numbered. |

Welcome to Heartbreak Hotel, a utopia for lost souls and broken hearts. Once a diamond on the English coastline, now as dilapidated and mysterious as the characters within its walls.
This summer, The Jetty – London’s new riverside arts venue - is transformed into Heartbreak Hotel, an intricately designed purpose built structure where the audience check-in to an immersive theatre event. |

EAT:
Lurra |
PARTY:
Manhattan’s Project |
From the people behind Donostia comes their second Basque restaurant, Lurra – just across the road. Inspired by the charcoal and wood grills, or "Erretegias", found throughout the Basque country, expect sharing plates and specialties such as Kokotxas (cod tongues) cooked three ways, seafood and vegetables cooked over coals, as well as aged Basque and Galician beef. |
Classic cocktails done right – or very wrong and done weirdly… is the concept behind Manhattan’s Project, the new boozy pop up at Pond Dalston. Wash down your Hawaiian food with a Big Apple Sour, followed by Hibiscus Coolers and a Sex on The Beach, naturally. Or stay classy and try their variations of Manhattans and Negronis – classic vs. retro, game on! |

SUNDAY |

DO:
Hammerschlagen |
SEE:
Heartbeat |
Stave off the Sunday blues with some classic Hammerschlagen – the German game that involves hammering a nail into a log with as few strikes as possible. We’re not joking. The new pop up in Dalston (where else?) will have you playing against the bartender for a discount on your bar tab, which will consist, we predict, mostly of beer. Germany via Dalston, oh my! |
And if Hammerschlagen hasn’t lifted the blues – how does 100,000 balloons sound? The latest cultural installation, Heartbeat, is just that: a collection of 100,000 white balloons by Charles Pétillon in the Market building at Covent Garden. Oh, and if balloons aren’t enough to get you there–it’s free. |
