FRAT PARTY

Is it just us or has London been feeling a bit like a frat party lately? At least, unlike our student days, it’s no backyard set up. There is a dedicated beer pong bar, top cocktailers are shooting boilermakers and miniature golf courses are big productions. London is getting hazed.

We first started feeling the frat vibes when louche cocktail spot Joyeux Bordel dedicated a section of their menu to the frat boy staple: the boilermaker (i.e whiskey chased with beer). But here, it’s obviously top shelf liquor and craft beer combos. Then, London’s darling of the cocktail scene, Ryan Chetiyawardana, launched his first beer: Mr Lyan Lager. To celebrate, two tins of the passionfruit ale and a dram of whiskey landed on the UJ desk for DIY boilermakers, with an invite to beer pong.

Speaking of beer pong, a two-floor bar dedicated to the college game has just opened in Shoreditch. Don your best polo and welcome SiNK with its 10 beer and ping pong tables… and robots (if you win against a robot, you get 10 beers). Even Soho Farmhouse has gotten into the spirit with a five -a- side football pitch, bowling alley, softball field, and crazy golf.

But, if you really want to get your frat boy on, do so at one of the many miniature golf courses recently opened in the capital. From rooftops to bunkers, London has been busy playing with balls. But the latest to open, Junkyard Golf Club, a nine hole crazy golf course of weird and twisted junk from car boots and charity shops, nails the frat scene with a bar serving cherry Lambrini!

Next, with the help of Paul Smith, Tom Dixon, and Zaha Hadid Architects, Trafalgar Square may be getting astroturfed for crazy golf. For reals.

It’s back. The House of Peroni Residency will be planting its flag in Haggerston celebrating all things Italian with the theme ‘for the love of Italy’. This year, taking over Proud East, acclaimed chef Francesco Mazzei (of Sartoria and previously of L’Anima) will be in charge of the menu, which includes handmade gelato, wood-fired pizza, freshly made pasta and a selection of Italian antipasti. There will also be a bookable five-course ‘feasting’ menu (£65 + booking fee), and a weekend brunch menu serving up an Italian version of the full English (The Italian Job) complete with a Regina Mary (Bloody Mary). As for the drinks, Simone Caporale will be back for his third residency mixing up variations of Italian classics, plus there’ll be a ticket-only floating Negroni bar serving a selection of five negronis, #UJloves. Oh, and as for the interior, Margherita Maccapani Missoni has put her Italian touch to it. La Dolca Vita! There are also ticketed classes including ‘For the love of Aperitivo’ and ‘For the love of Pasta’ that, of course, include tastings. Saluti!
