Weekend Guide June 17 - 19

This weekend is all about small restaurants with big credentials. We’ve got a simple French bistro from the guys behind Happiness Forgets, a humble 24 seat kitchen table restaurant by The Palomar, and a family-style ‘rice’ restaurant by two ex-Viajante and Chiltern Firehouse chefs. But, if you want your big-name restaurants helmed by bigwig chefs, try them all at Taste of London. Bon apps!

This Weekend’s Picks

• FRI The Barbary • SAT Petit Pois Bistrot • SUN The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition

Oh Berlin. Why do you have to be so cool? Now, aside from nightlife, they’ve got a bourgeoning food scene. Look at Chef Dylan Watson-Brawn and what he’s doing with breakfast. A firm believer in all things organic and biodynamic, he’s a new breed of creative chefs who believe in ‘food transparency’. Watch as he and his friend Spencer balance Japanese precision, and German efficiency’ while cooking up something traditional but with a local/organic twist. Paired with Nespresso Bukeela ka Ethiopia Grand Cru (fresh and floral with wild notes of musk and wood), he’s leading the way for breakfast and coffee pairings.

EAT:DRINK:
The BarbaryPanther Milk pop up at L'Escargot

We love The Palomar. So of course we love the news that its owners (siblings Layo and Zoë Paskin, who we also love) have opened a second restaurant, The Barbary. The menu, mostly cooked on fire or in clay ovens, will, according to the duo, ‘reflect the Atlantic Coast through to the Mediterranean Sea leading to Israel’: think cured sardine bruschetta, slow roasted goat, and octopus with roasted aubergine. The only bad news? It’s no reservations and has only 24 seats. Get there early or try for last orders. For those who missed its incarnation at the Hoxton Docks, good news: the Panther Milk Bar has popped up again, this time in Soho’s L’Escargot. Here, the Catalan cocktail, Panther Milk (a.k.a Leche de Pantera), has been made with the help of Chimo Oliver, an 82-year-old Catalan who honed his recipe during the Franco resistance and the fight against fascism. So the story goes. Viva la Leche de Pantera!

We’re counting the days to Wilderness! Aside from this year’s stellar line up: Robert Plant, Flaming Lips and Crystal Fighters (to name just the headliners), it’s all about getting lost in the rolling parklands. From open-air theatre to late-night parties in a hidden Valley and big band performances, workshops to the more chilled sanctuary devoted to yoga, meditation and chilling, there’s plenty to do…and more. As for the food? This year, Raymond Blanc, Skye Gyngell and Virgilio Martinez host Long-Table Banquets, there are Michelin stars everywhere plus a hoard of London’s best restaurants such as Hix, Moro, Raw Duck, the Quality Chop House…the list goes on. Book Now!

EAT:PARTY:
Petit Pois BistrotKrankbrother Street Party

It’s been awhile but the neo bistro is back on our radar – and with good reason, as it’s by Alastair Burgess and Chris Smith of Happiness Forgets and Original Sin. The cosy French bistro keeps things simple with dishes such as moules marinière, steak frites with béarnaise, and duck confit with gratin Dauphinoise, rounded off with chocolate mousse served tableside from a huge bowl. Perfect. The now annual Krankbrother street party is back! Taking over Christopher Street in Shoreditch, the electro shakeup has all the makings for a good day: street food vendors, various bars serving lashings of beer, cocktails and Prosecco and, of course, music courtesy of Derrick Carter, Horse Meat Disco, Mike Servito and Krankbrother. Post 10pm, head to Village Underground for the after party.

EAT:DO:
Curio + TA TAThe Royal Academy Summer Exhibition

Rice is in the spotlight at new restaurant Curio + TA TA. Helmed by chefs Zijun Meng and Ana Gonçalves, who are both ex-Viajante and Chiltern Firehouse, means you can expect more than your average stir-fry. The menu, which is divided into snacks, hot plates and cold dishes, has a Portuguese and Chinese spin: think prawn tartare with egg yolk, butifarra (Catalan sausage with fermented turnips and egg yolk) and Iberian pork ribs with black bean and onions – all served with rice. Sure, the new Tate Switch House might be stealing the headlines, but don’t forget about the season’s stalwart, The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. Celebrating its 248th season, the open-call art exhibition spans 10 rooms with 1250 works in all media from painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking to architecture and film. This year it has been curated by British sculptor Richard Wilson, who chose to focus on artists who work in pairs: Tim Noble and Sue Webster, Gilbert and George, the Chapman Brothers… and so on.
