The New York Exchange

The Curtain Hotel

Blame it on yesterday’s 4th of July festivities, but we have America on the mind. We’ve already adopted a few of their habits (brunch, trash food, picklebacks) and welcomed some high-octane NY openings (Shake Shack, The Ace Hotel, and Balthazar, to name but a few) over the years. And the love affair continues…

Having just recovered from celebrating Brooklyn’s oyster bar, Maison Premiere’s one-day cameo at Dandelyan (think boilermakers and oysters on repeat!), it’s on to London’s incarnation of Manhattan’s famous Dead Rabbit cocktail bar at The Big Easy for a good ‘ol cocktail clash: 6 Dead Rabbit cocktails vs. 6 homegrown Big Easy libations. London represent!

Next on the food front, cronuts may be old news, but they’re set to finally arrive in London with the Dominique Ansel Bakery in Belgravia… along with frozen s’mores and cookie shots. However, it’s really the return of British chef April Bloomfield (head chef of the acclaimed Spotted Pig, The Breslin, and The John Dory) that we’ve been craving – and it has finally happened. This summer, partnering with Tom Adams of Pitt Cue Co., the dynamic duo will put Cornwall on the culinary map with their new 66-acre gastro-farmhouse, Coombeshead Farm. The working farm, six-bedroom farmhouse and dining room opens tomorrow. Get in quick!

Speaking of highly anticipated hotel openings, the migration of American hotels has been non-stop: a trend started with The Ace, Mondrian, and Chiltern Firehouse continues with the soon-to-open Curtain Hotel. Sure, it may be part of The Gansevoort but we have it on good authority that a simple branch this is not: it will very much have its own identity. We don’t know much, but what we do know: there’ll be a rooftop swimming pool, private members’ club and, most excitingly, a Red Rooster restaurant, an offshoot of Marcus Samuelsson’s crowd-pleasing Harlem restaurant.
