| Island life | | Obonjan | | The heatwave continues. So, here at UJHQ, we’ve been dreaming of the island life. But not just any old island – rather, privately owned islands that are opening their shores. From festivals to Champagne-drenched escapes and restorative breaks, here are some islands to add to your bucket list.
| | Eschew your usual hedonist festival island for a more laid-back hideaway and head to Obonjan (pictured). After lying dormant for years, the Croatian island is set to welcome back visitors, as a curated island destination. Opening this weekend with a two-month-long creative programme of music, talks, art, health and workshops, but with a festival twist – Floating Points, Four Tet, DJ Shadow, Horse Meat Disco, and Gilles Peterson are just a few on the line-up. Oh, and forget about pitching your own tent – from £59 per person, it’s all about bell tents and forest lodges with all the traits of hotel rooms: beds, air conditioning, power sockets, linens, towels…
Next, if you’re looking for more of a Champagne fuelled island escape, book a trip to Krug Island on Osea, a privately owned rugged island in Blackwater Estuary – close to London and the place for those in the know. It’s brought to you by Krug Champagne, who have partnered with music legend Mick Jones and Michelin-starred chef Michael O’Hare for an unprecedented music, champagne, food sensory overload – for one night only – on September 1st.
But, if you want to get away from it all, Leonardo Dicaprio’s restorative island, Blackadore Caye, may be just the ticket. Set across 104 acres of wild, unpopulated land off the coast of Belize, it may have all the luxury trappings of sprawling villas and infinity pools, but restorative is at its heart, for both visitors and the island. Thanks to green-thumbed Dicaprio in charge, its role is to repair the damaged island. There’ll be a nursery with indigenous plants, manatee conservation, mangroves will be replanted and teams of specialists will constantly monitor the resort’s impact on its surroundings. The only bad news: it opens in 2018.
Until then, Marlon Brando’s eco island will have to do.
