Here at UJ, we rarely shy away from kitsch-tastic shindings — and, here’s one we’re putting straight in our diary: Old El Paso’s mini cantina pop-up, celebrating the launch of their new mini Stand N Stuff soft tacos. Aside from being given a mini taco meal (2 x Mini Stand ‘N’ Stuffs with a filling of your choice, tortilla chips and a drink of your choice), there’ll be mini sombreros, a mini mariachi band and even, a mini Danny Trejo. Oh, and it’s all free. Arriba Arriba!

Old El Paso Mini Cantina. Friday 19th August :11:30am – 7pm & Saturday & 20th August: 11:30am – 5pm (sittings are offered in 20 minute slots). First come, first served. Riverside Grass, Southbank

TOP 5

things to do in August

1. Sip cherry colas and boozy iced teas in a Summer Jungle

2. Looking for a post-Carnival party? The Southbound Carnival Sunday session with Mike Skinner is tipped to be a winner

3. Look the part with frilly swimwear and puff-shouldered crop tops from the ‘it’ collaboration between Hunza G X Pandora Sykes

4. For those who haven’t seen on Instagram, Frank’s Café has had a pink makeover

5. Netil360 is always a rooftop fave – think astro turf, epic views, a bar and plenty of power sockets.

EAT:DRINK:
Little PittSager + Wilde Paradise Row

Our boos of Pitt Cue Co leaving its Soho location (for a bigger Spitalifields site) has quickly turned to woos, thanks to its replacement Little Pitt. And, true to its name, the menu is small but it packs a punch. Expect queues to form for their pulled pork/chicken/beef buns, caramel ribs and green chilli slaw. Oh, and pickle backs. If, like us, you love tequila, especially on a sunny terrace, head to Sager + Wilde Paradise Row, asap. Take a seat outside and make your way through their new tequila cocktail menu. We’ll be ordering fig leaf margaritas and pink peppercorn palomas on repeat.

Eat:PARTY:
Small Plates SessionsThe South London Soul Train Disco Special

Welcome Small Plates Sessions, the latest party promising a trifecta for a good time: food, music and drinks. Giles Smith (Secretsundaze), Jack C (Krankbrother) and Antony Difrancesco (Fuse London) will provide the beats, while chef Ben Spalding will be dishing out small plates that include sticky pork ribs and smoked mackerel tortillas. The best bit? You can be in bed by 11pm. But, for those who don’t want to be tucked in by midnight, it’s over to The Bussey Building for some Studio 54 action. And this year, there’s an especially funked up twist: DJ John Morales, he who originally spun the decks at the original soul hole, will be spinning live to re-create some of the magic. Expect to get down, dirty and D-I-S-C-O.

‘ARTISTRY OF THE ULTIMATE GIN & TONIC’

G & ICE-T AT THE GILBERT SCOTT BY DAV EAMES

For those who want their G&T with a bit of somethin’ somethin’, head straight to the Gilbert Scott and order a G & Ice-T. Created by head bartender Dav Eames, who enjoys experimenting with food pairings and unusual flavours, the G & Ice-T is an edible take on the classic serve. Think part granita, part G&T and with flavours such as dried lemon verbena, freshly squeezed orange juice, orange blossom and, of course, Bombay Sapphire, this is the drink to order if you’re after a refreshing tipple. Like a snow cone, for adults.

The Gilbert Scott, St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel, Euston Road, NW1 2AR

The ‘G & Ice-T’ cocktail will be available at the Gilbert Scott until 11th January 2017. Watch this space for further information on ‘Artistry of the Ultimate Gin and Tonic’ serves available in individual partner mixology artists’ bars across London

Nike Unlimited YouMark Wallinger Self Reflection

For a sweat infused electro workout of the healthy kind, book a session with Nike’s Unlimited You. The sessions will have you sweating it out to a soundtrack by duo Alexis Taylor and Joe from Hot Chip, complete with immersive light installations. Choose from either an adrenaline-fueled Kobox class paired with a Nike Run Club (NRC) session or a fast paced Barry’s Bootcamp treadmill workout followed by a Nike Training Club (NTC) session. Like clubbing, but, not really. To celebrate Sigmund Freud’s 160th birthday, Turner Prize winning artist Mark Wallinger has installed a mirror across the entire ceiling of his iconic study and consultation room. It could represent Freud’s theory that doctors should be a mirror to their patients. Or represent our narcissistic society? The meanings run deep but before you ponder – let me take a #selfie.
