| Welcome To The Neighbourhoods | | Hackney Walk | | From restaurants to bars and pop ups and everything in between, London has never had a shortage of new openings keeping us busy. But the last few months the capital has been in overdrive, with whole new districts popping up or hitting refresh. It’s time for a new neighbourhood crawl.
| | Camden Market
Punks, goths, ravers… Camden has long been the capital of the alternative scene, but in the last few months, it has turned into a foodie hub (Voodoo Rays, Butchies, even Cereal Killer Cafe, to name a few). Plus, thanks to street food specialists KERB moving in and bringing a slew of new openings (35, to be precise) – Camden Market feels new. It hasn’t lost its music soul either. There’s been a #SaveFabric pop up (with Terry Francis on decks), and Coffee House Sessions (a not-for-profit collective committed to supporting new music talent) has been regularly hosting new acts. Plus, on any night of the week, the bars (Lockside, Proud Camden, Dingwalls) are still buzzing with live music.
Hackney Walk
In the last few years, Hackney has well and truly been a ‘rags to riches’ story. Case in point: Hackney Walk, the £200 million pound development set to rival Bicester Village. Last month, Joseph, Gieves & Hawke and Matches Fashion all moved in, joining Anya Hindmarch, Burberry, Aquascutum, Bally and Pringle of Scotland, making this unassuming street in Hackney into London’s first luxury outlet district. And the stores look good, too – this ain’t no simple jumble sale. Buh bye Bicester.
Flat Iron Square
Over on London’s Bankside, Flat Iron Square has just opened. Covering 40,000 sq ft. and encompassing seven railway arches, the new ‘Low Line’ is already rife with restaurants, street food vendors and bars: Bar Duoro (Portuguese tapas and wine bar), Tatami Ramen (from Barcelona), Cantina Carnitas (Mexican street food) and Baz & Fred (pizza) are just some of the inhabitants. Most excitingly, there’s a new gig venue, Omeara (helmed by Ben Lovett from Mumford & Sons), promising “a sponge of nocturnal happenings” from indie club nights to talks, comedy and burlesque.
And that’s just in the last year.
