London’s cultural highlights this February |
|
January is basically over (good news for anyone struggling through Dry January!) and February looks like it’s gonna be a good one. Culture, food, drink and our 2017 jams so far – we’ve found a lot to keep you going. To name a few, there’s a Great Gatsby Party, a new Ivy opening on our doorstep and a David Hockney exhibition. Enjoy!

|
| | | SEE 1: David Hockney at the Tate Britain | | It’s almost here! The Tate Britain’s Hockney retrospective, which UJ has been anticipating for months, opens February 9th, and promises to be the most comprehensive showcase of the well-loved British artist’s work yet. Expect everything – from his iconic swimming pool series to his much-imitated ‘joiner’ collages.
| | £19.50, 9th February – 29th May. Tate Britain, Millbank, SW1P 4RG

| PARTY: Great Gatsby Party at The Vaults | | A glittering party takes us back to a night where Jay Gatsby is the host and there’s live jazz, drinks all night and swing dancing. It might just be the best way to go into February… Expect five separate bars, trapeze artists, hot tubs, secret rooms and passages. A secret burlesque show (by invitation only) or a magician at your table – we hear it’s full of surprises all night. 1920s dress and dancing shoes encouraged. Join the party.
| | £16 – £17.75, 3rd February – 4th February. Leake St, SE1 7NN

In collaboration with Cuisson, the two month pop-up brings together resident traders and farmers to make the best seasonal menu, only using ingredients from the famous market. With a different chef working with the market traders each week, enjoy red mullet from Sussex Fish, salt-baked Celeriac & beaufort cheese from Mons Cheesemongers and charcuterie courtesy of Cannon & Cannon.
| | £6 – £16, Tue – Sat: 12-10pm, 1 Cathedral Street, SE1 9DE

| PLAY: UJ’s 2017 Jams | | If January has passed you by and you’re still stuck for what to listen to, we’ve got just the thing. Check out our 2017 Spotify playlist, which we’ll be updating weekly with what’s playing at UJHQ. Featuring The xx, Sampha and Shy Girls, it’s time to tune in.

|
| | | SEE 2: Eduardo Paolozzi at the Whitechapel Gallery | | There’s another must-see retrospective coming to London in February as Eduardo Paolozzi, aka ‘The Godfather of Pop Art’, comes to the Whitechapel Gallery. Spanning over five decades and 250 works, it offers a broad look at the British artist’s work: from bronzes and sculptures to collages and photographs.
| | £11.95, 16th February – 14th May. 77-82 Whitechapel High St, E1 7QX

|
| EAT 2: Bel Air | | Feel-good fast food came from LA to Shoreditch, and now Bel-Air brings #sunnyeveryday to Farringdon, bigger and better than before. Big on sunshine and with a Cali-inspired all-day menu, expect homemade juices on tap and healthy shakes. For breakfast, there’s the Egg Sidecar, Fat Stack breakfast bagels and the Bel-Air classic, the Pineapple House Granola, or head there at lunchtime for charred pumpkin falafel, Cinco De Mayo or pollo chili cerde. True to their LA roots, you’ll hear music straight outta Compton on arrival as you sit against the palm tree backdrop. California, knows how to party.

|
| | | SHOP: Supreme x LV | | The hype is real – the long-awaited collaboration between Supreme x LV is finally here! Available to buy in July this year, it’s already the most talked about collab of 2017, with items including a box logo t-shirt, six handbags, a skate deck and a baseball jersey. Likely to be available in pop-up shops, this capsule represents NY to a tee. Logo overload.

The Balham restaurant will host foodies Chicory Kitchen, The London Food Babes, Alex Hutton, Daft Puddin’s and Sam Stern, who will each take their place in the kitchen for three nights, cooking up a storm of Persian, Mexican and British food.
