Indian Summer

Ramen, poke, ceviche: we’ve seen a whole host of food trends come and go recently. But it seems like for this summer, we’re turning back to an old favourite and a forever classic: Indian. The Sethis (Trishna, Gymkhana, Motu Kitchen) have played an instrumental part in re-invigorating London’s Indian obsession, but here’s a few other notable newcomers that are on our radar.

A world away from Friday night takeaways, Mayfair’s Jamavar is the upscale option for Indian dining, and it doesn’t disappoint. Regularly touted as the best Indian in London, the kitchen is headed up by Rohit Ghai (formerly of Benares, Trishna and Gymkhana). It’s only been around for a few months, but the already-legendary status of dishes like Malai Stone Bass Tikka, Old Delhi Butter Chicken and Lobster Neeruli says volumes about the food. And the decor? Trust us when we say it’s suitably impressive – think dark timber, polished marble and a mirrored bar.

Jamavar’s speciality is upscale dishes cooked to perfection, but if you want something more pioneering, it’s time to try Kricket. A marriage of British ingredients and Indian flavours, the speciality here is innovative small plates. Indian classics are turned on their head with a subtle British twist: think samphire with your pakoras, bone marrow with your kulcha, hazelnuts with your paneer. They opened their first permanent site in Soho a few months ago, and it’s been rammed ever since.

For a more regional focus, try the newly opened DUM Biriyani House. The Wardour Street restaurant specialises in the cuisine of Andhra Pradesh and Telengana – most famously, the Hyderabadi biriyani. No surprises for guessing what the signature dish is here (choose lamb, chicken, or seasonal vegetables), but it’s not your typical fare: their biriyanis are cooked ‘dum’ style for several hours and topped with a pastry lid.

Now, take your pick and don’t forget the G&T.
