| Soul of the city | | Photo: © Danny North | | From Bushwick to Clapton, a city’s warehouse district has always been where some of the most exciting nights take hold. And now that summer’s here, heading out to a lofty warehouse party no longer seems like the worst thing you can imagine. Nothing lasts for long on this scene (Dalston’s Dance Tunnel, Peckham’s Bussey Building and Bethnal Green’s Oval Space all started life feeling like the back end of nowhere) so there’s limited time to explore these territories before they’re overrun.
| | Hackney Wick’s CRATE Brewery has become the unlikely catalyst for a host of canal-side foodie hotspots, and it’s now one of the most established for good reason. Nearby Shapes may have been and gone, but The Yard Theatre and Howling Hops have begun to attract a regular neighbourhood crowd that’s worth tapping into. By day, it may look like a car park, but by night, you’ll find the newly launched Mick’s Garage packed to the (working warehouse) rafters, alongside Jarr Barr, the UK’s first kombucha and cocktail bar.
For the new kids on the block, you’ll need to head further out. South of the river, Printworks’ 5,000 capacity venue is big enough to hold Berlin’s Berghain three times over, but owners London Warehouse Events are set on keeping the festivities civilised, with daytime-to-evening programming finishing at 10.30pm. Take into account Street Feast’s Hawker House just next door, and a once unlikely trip to Canada Water could now feature Ben Klock’s Photon presentation on 30th April and dinner from Yum Bun or Mother Clucker.
While all the fun from Shoreditch used to stop at Dalston, JME, Skepta and Gilles Peterson’s neighbourhood of Seven Sisters and Tottenham is finally coming into its own. Styx Bar, hidden behind Tottenham Hale, counts the Brownswood label owner as a regular. The Mill Co.’s Gaunson House has been flying the N15 flag for some time, and their flourishing Tottenham Social pop-ups at Craving Coffee are a brilliant excuse to catch future street food stars-in-the-making. As ever, they’re fleeting by nature: this month you’ll find two-day residencies with Nigerian tapas from Chuku’s and Mexican street food from Pink Cactus.
So seize the day and make sure you swing by before we’re sending you past the M25. It’s only a matter of time…
