| The Return Of The Dining Trolley | | The Oyster Cart at Chiltern Firehouse | | Call us childish, but we’ve been seeing trolleys, carts and meals on wheels finding their way back into our favourite dining spots – and we’re into it. It might feel retro, but we’re not talking about the dessert trolleys of yesteryear. The Grill Room at The Ned, Chiltern Firehouse’s Oyster Cart and HIX Soho’s trolley specialities are already well-documented, but who’s mixing it up?
| | If trolleys are on the way back in, it’s only right to namecheck a classic. Simpson’s in the Strand has just re-opened following a renovation, and is back serving its signature dishes from carving trolleys, table-side, as it has done since 1848. Here’s where to indulge in the British classics: roast rib of beef with Yorkshire pudding and duck fat roasted potatoes. You’ll know where to find us once autumn hits.
In Soho, new opening Magpie also takes its inspiration from traditional dim sum to serve its small plates from a trolley. Diners choose plates straight off the trolley, such as mackerel crudo with blueberry kosho and fennel pollen, or Hoi An-style terrine with nukazuke pickles. While the menu is certainly designed for sharing, owners James and Sam say the focus lies in having fun with “damn delicious food”, and not, as Sam implores “fretting over how to halve the third croquette”. Why stress when second helpings are only an arm’s reach away?
Further afield, #UJLoves how Emmer & Rye, based in East Austin, Texas, has combined farm to fork dishes with dim sum style to create an entirely different result. In addition to the seasonally focused menu that changes weekly, guests can order from circulating carts that offer innovative daily dishes from the chefs, who use whatever the local producers farmers and ranchers are excited about – so you better be ready to grab what takes your fancy. And as this is a chance for chefs to get creative, expect some memorable plates.
Out with kitsch, in with extra attention to detail. We’re loving this second coming.
