Uj oves superheroes

Up, Up, And Away

I’ve never been that into superheroes. The Golden Age of Superman and Wonder Woman passed me by, while the ‘80s was lumbered with some pretty poor comparisons: Captain Planet battling angry nuclear waste, kung-fu turtles, and Danger Mouse (an oxymoron in itself if you ask me). Unless we’re talking She-ra and the power of Grayskull, I stuck to Care Bears, My Little Pony, and Smurfs. The worst that ever happened to them was generally solved by hugs, rainbows, or you know, caring.

There must be evil at work somewhere though, as the genre is making a distinct comeback. Movies out this year include The Hulk, Iron Man, and The Dark Knight, whilst the MET in New York is exhibiting Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy , with the corresponding Costume Institute Gala bringing out models, designers, and Anna Wintour (looking like a praying mantis in Chanel) in their finest.

Diane Von Furstenberg has teamed up with DC Comics to release a Holiday 2008 Collection in October for modern day Wonder Women, Jean Charles de Castelbajac’s latest collection has some clear comic book inspiration (and will be available here when he opens his flagship London store on Conduit Street later this month), and even Topshop’s Oxford Circus window has been transformed into superhero land.

Time to consider: if you could have a superpower for the day, what would it be?
