Friday February 13: Happy V Day
With an entire weekend of love upon us this year, it's difficult to know where to look for some original inspiration. So if the UJ Valentines Guide hasn't quite struck a chord, where better to go for advice than the iconic Paul Smith? His Royal Smithy lets us in on the secrets of a successful love life in his UJ Blog.
What is the ideal Valentine's Gift?
I think a Valentine's gift has to be given for the right reason, it should be a genuine way of expressing your love to somebody - the more personal, the better. My wife had an exquisite little train designed and made for me - I’m the most difficult person in the world to buy for because my shops are filled with so many different objects, curiosities, paintings and much more. The train is so special to me; it is gold with black diamond coal handmade by Jar in Paris.
Where would you head for a romantic dinner?
I love The River Cafe, I always have the pork followed by homemade caramel ice cream for pudding.
What’s your secret London getaway?
A walk around the park itself at Holland Park - you see rabbits and peacocks roaming around and you can really imagine you’re in the countryside.
What are the key shops/places in your little black book?
The Sir John Soane’s Museum, 13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London and Holland Park which is like being in the countryside
What or who is the greatest love of your life?
My Mrs.
What does love feel like?
Happiness, the stability of a loving relationship in this mad world. It’s nice that there is something solid.
