A Matter of Taste

tast of london

Foodie fever hits the capital

When did food stop being fun, and become a source of pain (financial), anguish (nutritional) and confusion (microwaveable? Or not...?) I remember when potato-painting was a fridge-magnet worthy endeavour, when birthday cakes came in the shape of rocket ships, and whipped cream stopped just being an ice-cream topping.

So starting from tomorrow UJ are determined to rediscover the joy of food, finger-sucking, oohing and aahing Nigella style, kicking off with the Taste of London festival. We’re planning on hunting down Heston and his freaky feasts, quaffing some bubbly at the Laurent Perrier masterclass, and buying enough Crowns (Taste currency) to get us through Bentley’s fish and chips, The Dorchester’s rack of lamb, and newcomer The Modern Pantry’s ‘Icon Dish’ of Chermoula baked sea bass, before rounding it off with Asia de Cuba’s Mexican doughnuts with butterscotch sauce.

So far, so foodie – but for a really fun evening, why not snap up the last few tickets for the Experimental Food Society’s inaugural talk? Featuring jellymongers Bompass and Parr, guests will get taken through the intricacies of the wobbly stuff including tastings, historical analysis and plenty of weird recipes from the duo’s new book. Can’t get a seat? Don’t worry – the boys are also launching ‘Occult Jam’, a collection of condiments including ‘Milk Jam’ complete with a strand of Princess Diana’s hair, ‘Absinthe and Pineapple Jam’ containing sand from the Great Pyramids, and ‘Plum and Oak Jam’ infused with wood from Nelson’s ship. They’ll be available at The Barbican’s Surreal Exhibition with a launch party on the 24th June promising scone séances and occult cooking.

We know what the future holds – a great big spoon.
