Coiff It Up
Salons go Speakeasy
There’s nothing worse than coming out of the hairdressers and having your nearest and dearest ask whether ‘that’ is on purpose. Then again, it’s not terribly encouraging when nobody notices your new triple-figure do either. Between us, we’re over chain-store-style salons, being asked whether we’re going we have a holiday planned, and waiting with crusty copies of Hello Magazine for company. So we’re going speakeasy with a new crop of secretive salons with star quality.
Whilst UJ’s personal fave, Paul Merritt set up shop earlier this year, last month saw the launch of stylist to the stars (think Kylie, Sienna and Brad) Johnnie Sapong’s The Studio, perched on the top floor of the Lazarides Gallery. One chair, one basin, and one very serious stylist with 90 minute (minimum) sessions should see you walk away with a stellar do. If you prefer something a little more old-school, why not make an appointment at super-secretive Kennaland (the address is only revealed on booking), where Kenna Kennor holes up when not shooting with the likes of Rankin. Insiders are transported (with G&T in hand) into a bespoke world of leather chairs, antique artefacts and a bona fide lock of Elvis’ hair.
But if your tastes run more to the fashion-fabulous, your best bet is Charlie Le Mindu’s pop-up salon, taking place this Friday and Saturday in Soho with rumours of a monthly residency in the works. Renowned for his wild wigs, Fashion Week work and Gaga garnishing, this is your chance to put your tresses in some not-so-tame hands. Just make sure your mates know it was definitely ‘on purpose’.
