Beauty Spot

Beauty Barometer

UJ’s fabulous sleuths over at Cult Beauty are back this month to raise temperatures with their barometer of what’s hot and what’s not.

Going Up

Hair accessories. Think Banarama meets Land Girl and score extra fashion brownie points this spring by a channelling a retro vibe with an oversize bow headband as seen a Topshop Unique. Pale pastel shade scarves will be the height of laid-back cool.

Nude lips.
Seen everywhere at the golden globes, they’re big news for spring/summer ’09.  Fool them into thinking you’re a barefaced beauty and go for natural with a slick of nude lipstick. Otherwise keep up the drama with a full on shimmering nude gloss, a favourite of Ms Lopez, of course.

Beauty Water. Overindulged recently? Boost the post-party detox with mineral waters boasting extra vitamins.  Try Willow Water, which includes high levels of calcium and Salicin, a white willow bark derivative known for its anti-inflammatory properties. Keep it up for six weeks and you’ll notice clearer, blemish-free skin. Perfect for washing down your Sunday morning Ibuprofen.

Going Down

Latisse. From the makers of Botox, this Glaucoma drug will make your eyelashes grow longer and thicker. The price to pay? £80 a month and the risk of redness, itching and darkening of the eyelid skin. Err…no thanks.

Gym memberships.
Here in the UK we’re wasting £200 million a year on unused gym memberships, but still trying to pay the bills by cutting back on the few things in life that bring us pleasure (wine, make-up, handbags…) Get your priorities straight and bring your workout to your living room; invest in the Skinny Bitch Fitness: Boot Camp DVD and carry on shopping.

Playing it safe. The Golden Globes proved to be rather disappointing in terms of red glamour this year with the ordinarily fabulous Penelope Cruz looking distinctly, well, ordinary. ‘Safe’ half-up, half-down hair, neutral make up and a dress that resembles nothing more than a jazzed up potato sack…honey, that ain’t the look for a sexy Spanish senorita. At least Renee, erm, tried.
